The reading shelf

Books, read closely.

I look at what each book claims and make the strongest case for its argument before checking the assumptions and evidence.

How I read these books

Start with a passage

I focus on a sentence or passage that people often quote. The reading examines that argument in detail; it is not a review of the whole book.

Identify the assumptions

What must be true for the argument to work? I state those assumptions in plain language and examine them separately. Where a study has a scorecard, you can follow each verdict back to the reasoning.

Make the strongest case

Before criticising an argument, I work through the best reasons for accepting it, including replies to the obvious objections. A criticism should address the strongest version of the claim.

Read it in context

I look at where the idea came from and what the author was responding to. That context helps explain the passage, but whether its claim is true still needs a separate answer.
