Punjab: The Whole Truth — Five Thousand Years, One Honest Look

From the first farmers to the Khalistan question — every disputed number shown with its range and its source, and every side given its strongest argument before it is answered.

Punjab is one of the most argued-about places on earth. Say the word and people reach for a story. One person says Punjab is the sword-arm of India, the land that fed the country and guarded its border. Another says Punjab is a colony that India bled dry. One says Bhindranwale was a saint; another says he was a terrorist. One says Khalistan is a freedom movement; another says it is a Pakistani intelligence project run by lawyers in New Jersey. All of these people can produce facts — that is the problem. Almost every claim in the Punjab argument has some evidence behind it, and what people do is pick the facts that suit them and hide the rest. This tries to do the opposite: put all of it on the table, the glory and the shame, what Punjab did to others and what was done to Punjab, and then ask what the full picture actually supports. Most writing on the subject is a lawyer’s argument — pick a side, then hunt for evidence. This is meant to be a doctor’s report: look at everything, then say what you found, even if nobody likes it.
