In the last week of July 2026 an Instagram account went from nothing to nearly six million followers in seven days, and the comment sections underneath it were some of the angriest writing I have ever read from Indians about other Indians. The anger was not what struck me. Anger about jobs and exams in this country is completely understandable — I have felt it myself. What struck me was that almost nobody arguing seemed to know what they were arguing about. People were furious about a system whose actual rules they had never read, quoting history they had never checked, repeating numbers that were wrong on both sides. I include myself in that. So I went back to the beginning — the oldest texts, the archaeology, the genetics, the court records, the census files, and what the great minds on every side actually wrote rather than what people claim they wrote — and then came forward, slowly, until we reach the argument happening on our phones right now.
