The Wars of Punjab — Every War Fought on the Soil of Punjab, From the Beginning
Every war fought on the land of five rivers, from the Rigveda to 1971 — who fought, why, how, and who actually won — told in plain English, one part at a time, with an honesty label on every single claim.
Punjab has one geographical fact that decides most of its history: it is the only easy way into the Indian subcontinent by land, so for four thousand years, everybody who wanted in had to fight their way through it first. I set out to write down every war that fact ever produced — not just the famous ones, but the small, forgotten ones too — from the earliest hymns of the Rigveda through Alexander, the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughals, the Sikh Gurus, Ranjit Singh’s empire, the Anglo-Sikh Wars and Partition, up to 1971. Every war carries three things, wherever the sources allow it: an honesty label — Certain, Likely or Story, depending on how good the record actually is — the strategy the winner used, and the specific reason the loser lost.
