The Quote That Was Never Said
Open WhatsApp on any aunty’s phone in India and you will, sooner or later, see it: a square image with Einstein’s white hair and the line “We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made.” It is shared in family groups. It has been quoted by ministers. It has appeared in school textbooks. There is just one small problem.
Einstein never said it.
Alice Calaprice, the editor of The Ultimate Quotable Einstein (Princeton University Press, 2010), spent years cataloguing every line Einstein ever wrote or said. Her book runs to about 1,600 entries. This one is not among them. The Einstein Papers Project at Caltech and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem hold his complete archive. The quote is absent there too. The earliest known appearance is on the internet around 1997, and it travelled into the 2006 Trump/Kiyosaki book Why We Want You To Be Rich, then into WhatsApp, then into our pride.
This part is about that pride. It is about the family of claims that says the modern world owes everything to India and is hiding it. That Pythagoras came to the Ganges. That Plato is the Upanishads in Greek dress. That Newton stole gravity from Bhaskaracharya. That Darwin is hidden in the Dashavatara. That Jesus studied in Ladakh. That Tesla learned electricity from Vivekananda. That Sanskrit is the mother of all languages. That every modern thing, from atoms to aviation to the internet, was already in the Vedas.
Here is what I will not do in this part. I will not pretend India has given the world nothing. India gave the world the decimal place-value system. The number zero as a number with arithmetic rules. Panini’s grammar. Sushruta’s surgery. Aryabhata’s astronomy. The Buddha. These are real and need no inflation.
Here is what I will do. I will check every quote. Every date. Every claim that “the West stole” something. And I will show you, with named sources, where the inflated claim comes from, what the original Indian text actually says, and what the West actually did. Most of the chapters end with a small concession to India that turns out to be more interesting than the lie.
Pride built on a forged quote is not pride. It is rented confidence. Real pride does not need fake Einsteins.

1Pythagoras Studied with Indian Brahmins
The Greek philosopher Pythagoras travelled to India in his youth, spent years studying with Brahmin sages on the Ganges, and brought back the theorem named after him along with vegetarianism and the doctrine of reincarnation. The “Pythagorean theorem” is really an Indian theorem.
1Where It Came From
The travel-to-India motif was first attached to Pythagoras by late Roman writers, centuries after his death. Apuleius, in his Florida (c. 160s CE), and Philostratus, in the Life of Apollonius of Tyana (c. 220s CE), are the earliest extended versions. Both wrote roughly seven to eight hundred years after Pythagoras lived. The modern Indian version was popularised by Voltaire, who in Fragments historiques sur l’Inde (1773) and related writings of the 1760s and 1770s paraphrased the story as Pythagoras going “to the banks of the Ganges to learn geometry”. Voltaire was working from very limited 18th-century sources. Theosophists like H. P. Blavatsky (Isis Unveiled, 1877) carried it forward, and modern Hindutva writers including P. N. Oak and Subhash Kak now restate it routinely.
2What the Texts Actually Say
No Indian text, anywhere, in any century, says Pythagoras visited India. The travel motif is entirely Greek and Latin. On the geometry, the Baudhayana Sulba Sutra (Krishna Yajurveda school, dated by scholars to roughly 800 to 600 BCE) does state the relationship in altar-construction context, at verse 1.12 (also numbered 1.48 in older editions). A standard translation runs: “The diagonal of a rectangle produces by itself both the areas which its length and breadth produce separately.” That is a statement of the relationship, not a deductive proof.
3The Real History
Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570 to 495 BCE) left no writings. Everything about him is reconstruction from sources writing centuries later. His teacher, by ancient accounts, was Pherecydes of Syros, a Greek thinker. The “theorem” was almost certainly not proved by him; the first surviving deductive proof is Euclid’s, in Elements Book I, Proposition 47, around 300 BCE in Alexandria.
The relationship a² + b² = c² was known to the Old Babylonians by about 1800 BCE. The cuneiform tablet Plimpton 322, in the G. A. Plimpton Collection at Columbia University, lists Pythagorean triples a thousand years before any Indian or Greek statement of the rule. YBC 7289, in the Yale Babylonian Collection, calculates the diagonal of a square. The Chinese Zhou Bi Suan Jing (c. 100 BCE, reflecting older material) also has it. Three civilisations knew the relationship before Pythagoras was born, with no evidence of transmission between them.
The standard scholarly demolition of Pythagoras as the great Eastern traveller-sage is Walter Burkert’s Lore and Science in Ancient Pythagoreanism (Harvard University Press, 1972). Carl Huffman’s entry on Pythagoras in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (first published 2005, substantive revision 2018) directly states there is no good evidence Pythagoras travelled to India. Kim Plofker, in Mathematics in India (Princeton University Press, 2009), accepts Baudhayana’s priority over Pythagoras while rejecting the travel story.
4The Debunk
An ancient writer reporting on someone who lived eight hundred years earlier is not a primary source. It is a legend. Even Pythagoras’s biographers in late antiquity disagree wildly about where he went. The “Brahmin teacher” motif was added during the period when Greco-Roman intellectuals were fascinated with anything “Oriental”. It does not constitute historical evidence.
And as for the theorem: even if we are generous about Baudhayana’s date, the Babylonians were a full millennium ahead of him. The honest priority chain runs Babylon, then India and China independently, then Greece — and the first proof, the actual mathematical content of “Euclidean geometry”, is Greek.
5The Honest Picture
India does deserve credit. The Sulba Sutras genuinely state the geometric relationship two centuries before Pythagoras lived. Vedic altar-builders were sophisticated mathematicians. These facts stand on their own without anyone needing to travel to anyone. Saying “India had the result first among Indo-Greek civilisations” is true. Saying “Pythagoras came to the Ganges and stole it” is not.
2Greek Philosophy Is Just the Upanishads in Translation
Plato, Socrates, and the entire Greek philosophical tradition borrowed wholesale from the Upanishads and Vedanta. Western philosophy is simply Indian philosophy in Greek dress. Without the rishis, there would be no Plato.
1Where It Came From
This framing was popularised by Arthur Schopenhauer, who in Parerga und Paralipomena (1851) called the Upanishads “the solace of my life and... the solace of my death”. His admiration was real and influential. The Theosophists, especially Helena Blavatsky in Isis Unveiled (1877), pushed the borrowing thesis explicitly. In modern Hindutva discourse it is repeated by Rajiv Malhotra (Being Different, 2011; Indra’s Net, 2014), David Frawley, Subhash Kak, and Koenraad Elst.
2What the Texts Actually Say
The Upanishads (composed roughly 800 to 300 BCE) contain genuine philosophical depth. The Chandogya Upanishad’s “tat tvam asi” (6.8.7, “that thou art”), the Brihadaranyaka’s atman-brahman discussions, and the Katha Upanishad’s chariot allegory (1.3.3 to 1.3.4) are striking philosophical achievements. The Katha chariot, where the body is the chariot, the intellect the driver, and the mind the reins, does superficially resemble Plato’s chariot in Phaedrus 246a to 254e.
No Upanishad, however, mentions Greece, Greek thinkers, or any transmission westward. The reverse, that Greeks borrowed from India, is also not in any Upanishad. It is a modern inference, not an ancient claim.
3The Real History
Greek philosophy has its own documented lineage. The Milesian school — Thales (c. 624 to 546 BCE), Anaximander (c. 610 to 546 BCE), Anaximenes (c. 586 to 526 BCE) — developed natural philosophy in Ionia, with documented Egyptian and Babylonian mathematical influence, not Indian. Socrates (469 to 399 BCE) is known through Plato and Xenophon. Plato (c. 428 to 348 BCE) founded the Academy in 387 BCE. Direct India-Greece contact only became substantial after Alexander’s invasion (327 to 325 BCE) — that is, after Socrates was dead and Plato was elderly.
Thomas McEvilley’s The Shape of Ancient Thought (Allworth Press, 2002) is a serious 700-page work arguing that ideas did flow between India and Greece, in both directions, via the Persian corridor from roughly the 6th century BCE. The Achaemenid Empire controlled both Gandhara and Ionia from c. 530 BCE, creating a real channel. Christopher Beckwith’s Greek Buddha (Princeton University Press, 2015) argues Pyrrho (c. 360 to 270 BCE) was influenced by Buddhism during Alexander’s campaign — but Pyrrho, not Plato. Wilhelm Halbfass, India and Europe (SUNY Press, 1988), the definitive scholarly treatment, shows the “Indian origin of Greek philosophy” thesis is largely a 19th-century Romantic projection.
4The Debunk
Beware the fabricated quotes used to prop this up. The Heisenberg “Indian conversations” line, as it floats on WhatsApp, is a distortion of Fritjof Capra’s Uncommon Wisdom (Simon & Schuster, 1988), where Capra recalls Heisenberg saying that after meeting Tagore in 1929 “some of the ideas that had seemed so crazy suddenly made much more sense”. Heisenberg was talking about Tagore, in a private conversation, reported decades later by a third party. He did not credit the Vedas for quantum mechanics. The Einstein quote about owing everything to the Indians for counting is, as we will see in the next chapter, a complete forgery.
Of the four Greek thinkers whose names are most often dragged into this claim — Thales, Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato — three lived before any substantial Indian text was translated into Greek. The first Greek-Indian philosophical exchange securely dated is the conversations preserved in the Buddhist Milindapanha (the Questions of King Milinda, Indo-Greek king Menander, c. 150 BCE), more than two centuries after Plato.
5The Honest Picture
Ideas did cross Persia in the 6th to 4th centuries BCE. Reincarnation in Pythagoreanism and in the Upanishads is a striking parallel that serious scholars take seriously. Schopenhauer’s love of the Upanishads is real and Western intellectual history is richer for it. But “ideas in conversation across Persia” is not the same as “Plato copied Vedanta”. The latter erases two thousand years of independent Greek work to flatter ourselves.
3Einstein Said “We Owe a Lot to the Indians”
Albert Einstein said: “We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made.” This proves that even the greatest physicist of the twentieth century admitted modern science depends on India.
1Where It Came From
The quote has no single inventor. Its earliest known appearance is on the internet around 1997. It then jumped into print in Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki’s Why We Want You To Be Rich (Rich Press, 2006), which cited it as Einstein without giving a source. From there it spread to Goodreads, AZ Quotes, BrainyQuote, Indian school textbooks, government tourism material, and the speeches of cabinet ministers. By 2014 it was being recited from Indian podiums as if it were Einstein scripture.
2Where the Quote Actually Comes From
It does not come from Einstein. Anywhere.
The complete, vetted, primary-source record of what Einstein said is in three places. First, The Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, edited by Diana Kormos-Buchwald at Caltech and Princeton University Press, an ongoing series since 1987. Second, the Einstein Archives at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (einsteinpapers.press.princeton.edu). Third, Alice Calaprice’s definitive compilation The Ultimate Quotable Einstein (Princeton University Press, 2010), which catalogues about 1,600 vetted Einstein quotations and explicitly flags fakes. The “we owe a lot to the Indians” line appears in none of these. Calaprice lists it as misattributed.
3The Real History the Forgery Stands On
India did genuinely give the world the decimal place-value system and zero as a number with its own arithmetic rules. Aryabhata, in the Aryabhatiya (499 CE), established the place-value principle, summarised by his early commentators (notably Bhaskara I, c. 629 CE) as sthanam sthanam dasagunam — “each place is ten times the previous”. Brahmagupta, in the Brahmasphutasiddhanta (628 CE), gave the first formal arithmetic rules for zero as a number, including operations with negative numbers.
The system reached the Islamic world through al-Khwarizmi’s lost Arabic treatise (c. 825 CE), which survives only in Latin translation as Algoritmi de numero Indorum, and through al-Kindi (c. 830 CE). It reached Europe through Leonardo of Pisa, called Fibonacci, in his Liber Abaci (1202). Fibonacci called it modus Indorum — the method of the Indians. That credit, in those exact Latin words, is still in the standard history of mathematics.
4The Debunk
The fake quote is doing strange and ugly work. It is taking a true and beautiful history — that medieval Europeans, in their own books, in their own Latin, called the system “the method of the Indians” — and replacing it with a forged Einstein endorsement that no one needs.
This is the same pattern with several other fake Einstein quotes that circulate in the same forwards. “When I read the Bhagavad-Gita and reflect about how God created this universe everything else seems so superfluous” — not in any Einstein source. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results” — not Einstein either (it appears in Narcotics Anonymous literature). “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity” — same, no source. Garson O’Toole, the Quote Investigator (quoteinvestigator.com), has documented dozens.
What Einstein did say about India is on record. In 1939, for Gandhi’s seventieth birthday, in a volume edited by S. Radhakrishnan, Einstein wrote: “Generations to come, it may well be, will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.” That tribute is real, sourced, and was reprinted in Einstein’s Out of My Later Years (Philosophical Library, 1950).
5The Honest Picture
India gave the world numerals. Fibonacci credited India by name in 1202. The history is in the textbooks. No fake Einstein is needed to confirm what European mathematicians already conceded eight hundred years ago. Strip the forgery away and the real story is brighter.
4Newton Stole Gravity from Bhaskaracharya
Isaac Newton stole the laws of motion and the concept of gravity from Bhaskaracharya, whose Siddhanta Shiromani (1150 CE) had already described gravitational attraction five centuries earlier. Newton’s Principia is recycled Indian physics.
1Where It Came From
P. V. Vartak’s Vedic-science writings in the 1980s and 1990s laid the groundwork. The claim was pushed into school curricula by Dinanath Batra’s Shiksha Bachao Andolan textbooks (Gujarat State Board, 2014). Union Minister Harsh Vardhan claimed at the 102nd Indian Science Congress (Mumbai, January 2015) that Indians discovered the Pythagorean theorem and algebra before the Greeks and Arabs. The explicit “Newton was wrong, gravity was Indian” version was delivered by K. J. Krishnan at the 106th Indian Science Congress (2019), the same speech that contained the now-famous line about “Narendra Modi Waves”.
2What the Text Actually Says
Bhaskara II, called Bhaskaracharya (1114 to 1185 CE), completed the Siddhanta Shiromani in 1150 CE at age thirty-six. In its Goladhyaya section, Bhuvanakosha chapter, verse 6, he wrote (as rendered into English by Lancelot Wilkinson and Bapu Deva Sastri, 1861):
“The Earth, owing to its force of attraction, draws objects towards itself, and they appear to fall. Since the sky is equal on all sides, where would the Earth fall?”
This is the genuine verse. It is a real and remarkable insight. Brahmagupta said something very similar in the Brahmasphutasiddhanta (628 CE), preserved most clearly in Al-Biruni’s rendering (c. 1030 CE): heavy things fall to the Earth by a natural law. Indian astronomers had a qualitative concept of earthly attraction many centuries before Newton.
What Bhaskara does not have: the inverse-square law, universal gravitation between all masses, the three laws of motion, calculus-based mechanics, any quantitative formula, or the idea that the same force keeps the Moon in orbit. Verses claiming Bhaskara stated “Newton’s three laws of motion” are fabrications — no such verses exist in Siddhanta Shiromani. The widely circulated English line “Objects fall on earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. Therefore, the earth, planets, constellations, moon and sun are held in orbit due to this attraction” is an embellished paraphrase. The Sanskrit verse does not contain “planets, constellations, moon and sun”.
3The Real History
Isaac Newton (1642 to 1727) published Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica in London in July 1687, financed by Edmond Halley. His unique contribution was the mathematical synthesis: proving that an inverse-square central force produces Keplerian elliptical orbits, and that the same force that pulls an apple down also holds the Moon in orbit. He built directly on Kepler (Astronomia Nova, 1609), Galileo (Discorsi, 1638), Hooke (1679 to 1680 letters proposing inverse-square attraction), and Huygens (Horologium Oscillatorium, 1673).
Newton did not read Sanskrit. The first English translation of Siddhanta Shiromani, by Lancelot Wilkinson and Bapu Deva Sastri, was published in 1861 — 174 years after the Principia and 134 years after Newton’s death. Bhaskara’s verse was essentially unknown in seventeenth-century Europe. The “stealing” claim has no causal mechanism.
4The Debunk
The historian of science Meera Nanda, in Prophets Facing Backward: Postmodern Critiques of Science and Hindu Nationalism in India (Rutgers University Press, 2003), and Kim Plofker, in Mathematics in India (Princeton University Press, 2009), both treat Bhaskara generously while rejecting the “Newton stole” framing. Indian historian of astronomy S. Balachandra Rao has specifically debunked the inflated claims about Bhaskara having anticipated Newtonian mechanics.
No NASA paper has “confirmed” Bhaskaracharya’s calculations. Bhaskara did not “give the value of g” — he did not quantify gravitational acceleration at all. Calling Siddhanta Shiromani a 1114 CE book is wrong; Bhaskara was born in 1114 CE, and finished the book in 1150.
5The Honest Picture
Brahmagupta and Bhaskaracharya were genuinely brilliant. They had a qualitative concept of earthly attraction roughly five centuries before Newton. That is a real Indian achievement that deserves to be taught and celebrated. What is not a real Indian achievement is the law of universal gravitation, which required Kepler, Galileo, Hooke, Huygens, calculus, and a mind that worked through six years of solitary mathematical labour to produce the Principia. Both stories can be told. They are different stories.
5Darwin’s Evolution Is Hidden in the Dashavatara
The ten incarnations of Vishnu — matsya (fish), kurma (turtle), varaha (boar), narasimha (half-man), vamana (dwarf), rama, krishna, buddha, and kalki — encode Darwin’s theory of evolution. Ancient Indians knew about evolution thousands of years before Darwin.
1Where It Came From
The first explicit Dashavatara-Darwin comparison was made by Keshub Chunder Sen, the Brahmo Samaj reformer, in a lecture in 1882, twenty-three years after Darwin’s On the Origin of Species appeared (1859). His exact words, in his Lectures in India, were:
“The Hindu Avatar rises from the lowest scale of life through the fish, the tortoise, and the hog up to the perfection of humanity. Indian Avatarism is, indeed, a crude representation of the ascending scale of Divine creation. Such precisely is the modern theory of evolution.”
Notice: Sen called it “crude”. He was responding to Darwin and trying to harmonise Hindu tradition with modern science. He was not claiming Hindu priority. The claim of priority is a later distortion, popularised by Vivekananda, Aurobindo, and in our time by Subhash Kak, David Frawley, Rajiv Malhotra, and the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan textbook controversies.
2What the Texts Actually Say
No Sanskrit text presents the Dashavatara as biological evolution. The classical sources are the Bhagavata Purana (9th to 10th century CE), Canto 1, Chapter 3; the Garuda, Matsya, and Agni Puranas (which give variant lists, sometimes 22 or 24 avatars); and Jayadeva’s Gita Govinda (12th century CE), whose opening Dashavatara Stotra gives the standard ten.
All these sources frame the avatars as theological descents of Vishnu in different yugas to restore dharma. The opening verse of the Dashavatara Stotra tells how Matsya saved the Vedas from a flood — not how Matsya evolved into Kurma. No premodern commentator — Sridhara, Vishvanatha Chakravarti, Madhva, Ramanuja — interpreted the sequence biologically.
And here is the killer detail. The canonical list goes matsya, kurma, varaha, narasimha, vamana, parashurama, rama, krishna, buddha, kalki. The popular WhatsApp version routinely skips Parashurama. Why? Because Parashurama is a fully human warrior-priest who appears before Rama and Krishna. There is no “aquatic-to-human ladder” if a fully-human form sits in the middle of it.
3The Real History
The theory of evolution by natural selection was developed by Charles Darwin (1809 to 1882) and Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 to 1913), presented in their joint paper to the Linnean Society of London on 1 July 1858. Darwin’s On the Origin of Species followed on 24 November 1859. The mechanism — natural selection acting on heritable variation, producing a branching tree of common descent — has no parallel in any Indian text. The genetic basis came from Gregor Mendel’s 1866 paper on peas, and was synthesised with Darwin in the Modern Synthesis (1930s to 1940s) by R. A. Fisher, J. B. S. Haldane, Sewall Wright, Theodosius Dobzhansky, and Ernst Mayr.
4The Debunk
The supposed J. B. S. Haldane endorsement — “The ten incarnations are a true sequential representation of the great unfolding of evolution” — is fake. Haldane never wrote it. In his Indian-period essays (c. 1961 to 1964), he made a brief, passing remark that the Dashavatara sequence was a curious “rough idea” of vertebrate evolution, framed as pre-scientific coincidence. He was being polite, not declaring priority.
C. Mackenzie Brown’s Hindu Perspectives on Evolution: Darwin, Dharma, and Design (Routledge, 2012) is a 280-page scholarly treatment showing the comparison is a modern apologetic invention by 19th-century reformists responding to Darwin. Meera Nanda, in Science in Saffron: Skeptical Essays on History of Science (Three Essays Collective, 2016), specifically dismantles the Dashavatara-Darwin claim.
The deepest problem is mechanism. Darwin’s theory is about branching common descent through random variation and differential reproduction. The Dashavatara is a linear sequence of distinct divine descents with no genetic or temporal continuity between forms. Vishnu does not slowly mutate from a fish into a turtle. He descends as one, dies or vanishes, and later descends as the other, in a different cosmic age, with no biology between them.
5The Honest Picture
The Dashavatara is a beautiful theological structure. The cosmic-time framework of yugas, with avatars descending to restore dharma in each age, is a sophisticated religious imagination. Keshub Chunder Sen’s 1882 comparison was a creative bridge between traditions. None of that requires saying Vyasa anticipated Darwin. The Vyasa we have is more interesting than the Vyasa we are trying to invent.
6Jesus Lived in India During His “Lost Years”
Jesus Christ, known as “Issa”, lived in India and Tibet between the ages of 13 and 29 — the “lost years” that the Gospels do not describe. He studied with Hindu and Buddhist masters, and a manuscript proving this exists at Hemis Monastery in Ladakh.
1Where It Came From
The claim originates with a single book by a single man: Nicolas Notovitch (1858 to after 1916), a Russian-Crimean journalist of Jewish background. He published La vie inconnue de Jésus-Christ (“The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ”) in Paris in 1894, claiming that in 1887 he broke his leg near Hemis Monastery in Ladakh, was nursed there, and was read aloud a Tibetan manuscript titled “The Life of Saint Issa, Best of the Sons of Men”.
The story was later amplified by Swami Abhedananda (Kashmir O Tibbate, 1929), Nicholas Roerich (Altai-Himalaya, 1929), Elizabeth Clare Prophet (The Lost Years of Jesus, Summit University Press, 1984), and Holger Kersten (Jesus Lived in India, Droemer Knaur, 1983 in German; Element Books, 1986 in English).
2What the Sources Actually Show
No Sanskrit Hindu scripture — Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, epics — mentions Jesus, “Issa”, or any first-century Galilean studying in India. The often-cited Bhavishya Purana passage about “Isha-Masiha” (Pratisarga Parva) is a clearly late interpolation. Indologists date the relevant verses to no earlier than the 18th to 19th century CE, after Mughal contact with Christians, and the passage simply paraphrases Christian belief.
No Tibetan Buddhist text in the Kanjur (108 volumes of translated Buddha-words) or Tanjur (around 225 volumes of commentaries) contains a “Life of Saint Issa”. These canons were catalogued in the 14th century by Buton Rinchen Drub (1322 CE) and re-catalogued by Csoma de Körös (1836) and later scholars. No “Issa” text appears.
The only “text” that exists is Notovitch’s own French translation of a supposed manuscript he never produced.
3The Real History
The exposure of the hoax came swiftly. In October 1894, the great Oxford Indologist Max Müller published “The Alleged Sojourn of Christ in India” in The Nineteenth Century, vol. 36, pp. 515 to 522, noting that no such text appeared in any catalogue of the Kanjur or Tanjur. In June 1895, J. Archibald Douglas, Professor of English and History at Government College, Agra, travelled to Hemis Monastery in person. He interviewed the head lama, who signed a sealed statement saying that no European matching Notovitch’s description had ever been treated there for a broken leg, no manuscript about Issa existed in the monastery, and the lama had never heard of such a text. Douglas published the findings as “The Chief Lama of Hemis on the Alleged ’Unknown Life of Christ’” in The Nineteenth Century, vol. 39 (April 1896), pp. 667 to 678.
The scholarly consensus that the Notovitch text is a 19th-century forgery has been consistent ever since. Edgar J. Goodspeed, Modern Apocrypha (Beacon Press, 1956), chapter 1. Per Beskow, Strange Tales About Jesus (Fortress Press, 1983). Bart D. Ehrman, Did Jesus Exist? (HarperOne, 2012).
4The Debunk
The head lama of Hemis spoke through Douglas in 1895. His recorded statement, as published in The Nineteenth Century, called the entire Notovitch account “lies, lies, lies, nothing but lies”. One year after the book had appeared and started travelling around Europe, the very monastery where the manuscript was supposed to exist had denied everything in writing, under seal.
The separate “Roza Bal” tomb claim in Srinagar — that Jesus survived the cross and is buried there — is a different fabrication, originating with Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya movement, in 1899. It should not be conflated with the Notovitch story; they are two different hoaxes with two different sources.
5The Honest Picture
The Gospels are genuinely silent about Jesus between roughly age 12 (Luke 2.41 to 52, the Temple episode) and age 30. The silence is real and has invited speculation for centuries. The “lost years” question is a legitimate historical curiosity. Mainstream New Testament scholarship (E. P. Sanders, The Historical Figure of Jesus, Penguin, 1993) holds that Jesus most likely worked as a craftsman in Nazareth — an unremarkable life the evangelists had no theological reason to record. That is the honest answer to the silence, and it does not require inventing a manuscript.
Hemis Monastery, founded in 1672 by King Sengge Namgyal, is a real and important Drukpa Kagyu institution. It does not deserve to be the prop in someone else’s nineteenth-century novel.
7Sanskrit Is the Mother of All Languages
Sanskrit is the mother of all languages. English, Greek, Latin and every Indo-European language descended from it. Devanagari is the source of the Roman alphabet. NASA has declared Sanskrit the most suitable language for computer software.
1Where It Came From
The “mother of all languages” claim was pushed by Dayananda Saraswati and the Arya Samaj (founded 1875), which held that Sanskrit and the Vedas were the source of all knowledge. P. N. Oak, in World Vedic Heritage (2003), made the extreme version claiming all world languages and scripts descended from Sanskrit. The “NASA declared Sanskrit best for computers” claim is a misreading of Rick Briggs’s article “Knowledge Representation in Sanskrit and Artificial Intelligence” in AI Magazine, Vol. 6, No. 1 (1985), published by the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. Briggs was a researcher at RIACS, hosted at NASA Ames Research Center — the article is his own, not a NASA statement. A separate, often-cited “Forbes Magazine 1987” article naming Sanskrit best for computers does not exist.
2What Sir William Jones Actually Said
The line is constantly misquoted. Sir William Jones, in his Third Anniversary Discourse to the Asiatic Society of Bengal on 2 February 1786 (published in Asiatick Researches, Vol. 1, 1788), said:
“The Sanskrit language, whatever be its antiquity, is of a wonderful structure; more perfect than the Greek, more copious than the Latin, and more exquisitely refined than either, yet bearing to both of them a stronger affinity, both in the roots of verbs and in the forms of grammar, than could possibly have been produced by accident; so strong, indeed, that no philologer could examine them all three, without believing them to have sprung from some common source, which, perhaps, no longer exists.”
Read it carefully. Jones is saying Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin are siblings, descended from a common source which no longer exists. That is the opposite of “Sanskrit is the mother”. It was the founding moment of comparative linguistics. The Hindutva version inverts what Jones said.
3The Real History
The reconstructed common ancestor is called Proto-Indo-European (PIE). It was likely spoken between roughly 4500 and 2500 BCE on the Pontic-Caspian steppe (the Kurgan hypothesis, Marija Gimbutas 1956). Modern genetics has powerfully confirmed this. David Anthony, The Horse, the Wheel, and Language (Princeton University Press, 2007). Reich et al., Nature, 2009. Narasimhan et al., “The formation of human populations in South and Central Asia”, Science, 2019, traced the Steppe ancestry component into India in the second millennium BCE. Sanskrit and Greek are cousins descended from PIE, not parent and child. Franz Bopp’s Über das Conjugationssystem der Sanskritsprache (1816) and Rasmus Rask formally established the family.
On the script side, the Roman alphabet descends through this chain: Proto-Sinaitic (c. 1850 BCE, Sinai) to Phoenician (c. 1050 BCE) to Greek (c. 800 BCE) to Etruscan (c. 700 BCE) to Latin (c. 600 BCE). The Devanagari script descends through: Brahmi (3rd century BCE, first attested in Ashoka’s edicts c. 250 BCE) to Gupta script (4th century CE) to Nagari (7th century CE) to Devanagari. Brahmi itself most likely derives from a Semitic script (Aramaic or Phoenician), per Georg Bühler, On the Origin of the Indian Brahma Alphabet (1898) and Richard Salomon, Indian Epigraphy (Oxford University Press, 1998). Devanagari and the Roman alphabet are distant cousins through the Semitic family — Devanagari is the younger cousin, by several centuries.
4The Debunk
Sanskrit, as Sir William Jones observed in 1786, is a magnificent language. Leonard Bloomfield, in his 1929 review essay in Language, vol. 5, pp. 267 to 276, called Panini’s Ashtadhyayi (c. 5th century BCE) “one of the greatest monuments of human intelligence”. That praise is real, and is for the grammar’s formal precision, which is genuinely admirable.
None of that makes Sanskrit the mother of English or of the Roman alphabet. Mainstream historical linguistics — the entire post-Jones tradition, from Bopp through Saussure through Calvert Watkins through every modern Indo-European handbook — treats Sanskrit as one daughter of PIE among many. Michael Witzel (Harvard) has specifically rebutted “Out of India” theories in “Autochthonous Aryans? The Evidence from Old Indian and Iranian Texts” (Electronic Journal of Vedic Studies, 2001). The leading living Sanskrit linguist, George Cardona (University of Pennsylvania), in his standard handbook Panini: A Survey of Research (Mouton, 1976), places Sanskrit firmly within Indo-European, not above it.
5The Honest Picture
Sanskrit is one of humanity’s most sophisticated languages, with the most precisely engineered ancient grammar ever produced. Panini’s Ashtadhyayi is genuinely a landmark of formal-systems thinking, admired by linguists and computer scientists alike. None of these real and large achievements require Sanskrit to be the mother of every other language. Jones himself, who loved Sanskrit, was content to call it a sister. So can we.
8Tesla’s Electricity Came from Vivekananda
Nikola Tesla’s electrical inventions and modern “free energy” concepts come from Vedic knowledge passed to him by Swami Vivekananda. Tesla read the Upanishads, credited Indian wisdom, and built his work on Vedanta. The West suppressed this debt.
1Where It Came From
The claim is diffuse but is most cleanly anchored by Subhash Kak’s essay “Tesla, Wireless Energy Transmission and Vivekananda” (around 2018 to 2020) and by the Tesla Memorial Society of New York’s webpage “Nikola Tesla and Swami Vivekananda” (teslasociety.com), which is widely cited in Indian press. WhatsApp forwards and Hindutva blogs (Organiser, Swarajya, Awaken.com) have inflated this into the larger claim that Tesla’s alternating current system, wireless power, and “free energy” itself originated in the Vedas.
2What Actually Happened Between Tesla and Vivekananda
They did meet. The meeting is real. The date is well-documented. It was not at the 1893 Chicago Parliament of Religions, as is often repeated. They met in New York in late January or early February 1896, introduced through Sarah Bernhardt’s circle. Vivekananda’s letter to E. T. Sturdy dated 13 February 1896 (preserved in The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, Vol. 5, Epistles, First Series) records that Tesla was “charmed to hear about the Vedantic Prana and Akasha and the Kalpas” and thought he could “demonstrate mathematically that force and matter are reducible to potential energy”. Tesla never delivered that demonstration. The borrowing was of vocabulary, in conversation, after a friendly dinner.
Tesla did later use the Sanskrit words. In an essay titled “Man’s Greatest Achievement”, written in 1907 and first published in the New York American on 6 July 1930, Tesla wrote that “all perceptible matter comes from a primary substance, or tenuity beyond conception, filling all space, the Akasha or luminiferous ether, which is acted upon by the life-giving Prana or creative force”. So Vivekananda did influence Tesla’s vocabulary and his metaphysical framing in one essay, decades after their meeting. That part is true.
3The Real History of Tesla’s Inventions
Tesla’s signature work was complete before he ever met Vivekananda. He filed his polyphase alternating current motor patents in April and May 1888 (US Patent 381,968 and others), and demonstrated the system before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers on 16 May 1888 in his lecture “A New System of Alternating Current Motors and Transformers”. Galileo Ferraris in Turin had developed a similar rotating-field motor in laboratory work from 1885 and presented it formally in March 1888. Westinghouse licensed Tesla’s patents in July 1888. All this happened seven to eight years before he met Vivekananda.
The theoretical basis for electromagnetic engineering is Michael Faraday’s discovery of electromagnetic induction (1831) and James Clerk Maxwell’s equations in A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (Clarendon Press, 1873). Tesla repeatedly cited Maxwell. Wardenclyffe Tower in Shoreham, New York, was funded by J. P. Morgan from 1901, abandoned around 1906, and dynamited in July 1917 — it failed because broadcasting useful power through the Earth-ionosphere cavity is physically impractical, not because of suppression. “Free energy” in the perpetual-motion sense violates the first and second laws of thermodynamics. No Tesla notebook describes it.
The standard biographies — John J. O’Neill, Prodigal Genius (1944); Margaret Cheney, Tesla: Man Out of Time (1981); Marc Seifer, Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla (Birch Lane Press, 1996); W. Bernard Carlson, Tesla: Inventor of the Electrical Age (Princeton University Press, 2013) — document the inventive timeline and do not credit Vedic origin.
4The Debunk
Two quotes you will see in forwarded videos do not exist in Tesla’s writings. “Vedanta is the most rational, scientific religion” — no source. “If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration” — has no documented Tesla source before the 2000s. Treat as apocryphal. There is no Walter Isaacson Tesla biography (you may be thinking of Isaacson’s Einstein or Jobs books).
Tesla did not “read the Upanishads”. No biographer documents him owning them or studying them. He picked up Sanskrit vocabulary in conversation with Vivekananda in 1896, used it in one 1907 essay, and went on with his electromagnetic engineering as he had been doing since the late 1880s.
5The Honest Picture
The Tesla-Vivekananda meeting is a beautiful moment of late-Victorian intellectual history. Two unconventional minds, in New York, in 1896, discussing matter and energy across cultures. That is worth celebrating exactly as it happened. Inflating it into “Tesla’s electricity is Vedic” pushes a genuine cross-cultural encounter into a falsified theft narrative. The encounter itself was the gift, not a chain of evidence.
9Mark Twain and Will Durant Both Said So
Mark Twain wrote that “India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, grandmother of legend, and great grandmother of tradition”. Will Durant said India was “the motherland of our race, and Sanskrit the mother of Europe’s languages”. The greatest Western minds have long recognised India as the source of all civilisation — India keeps being denied the credit.
1A Different Kind of Chapter
Both quotes are real. This chapter is going to be careful to say that clearly. Earlier in this part we have debunked fabricated quotes. We will not pretend a real quote is fake just because it gets misused. What we will show is the context around both quotes, and why the use they are put to is dishonest even though the words are real.
2What Twain Actually Wrote
Mark Twain spent roughly two months in India in early 1896, on a paid round-the-world lecture tour to clear his bankruptcy debts. The quote appears in Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World (American Publishing Co., Hartford, 1897), in Chapter 38, as Twain arrives in Bombay. The full sentence, in his actual order, runs:
“This is indeed India! the land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendor and rags, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence, of genii and giants and Aladdin lamps, of tigers and elephants, the cobra and the jungle, the country of a hundred nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and two million gods, cradle of the human race, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend, great-grandmother of tradition...”
Two things to notice. First, “cradle of the human race” is in the same sentence as “two million gods” and “Aladdin lamps”. Twain is in rhapsodic-tourist mode, not making an anthropological claim. Second, the popular condensed version that floats around drops the rest of the sentence to make it sound like a scholarly verdict. It was not. Twain was a humorist novelist, not a historian, and he never cites a source.
3What Durant Actually Wrote
Will Durant published The Case for India with Simon & Schuster in New York in 1930. It was a polemical pamphlet attacking British rule after a brief visit, and it was banned in British India. The opening section contains the famous passage:
“India was the motherland of our race, and Sanskrit the mother of Europe’s languages: she was the mother of our philosophy; mother, through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics; mother, through the Buddha, of the ideals embodied in Christianity; mother, through the village community, of self-government and democracy. Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all.”
The passage is real. It is also a 1930 political pamphlet written to support Indian independence. Durant held a 1917 Columbia PhD in philosophy, not history, and the book is not part of his later eleven-volume Story of Civilization (1935 to 1975), which is more measured. Conflating the two is a common error.
4The Real History
Now look at what the quotes are stretched to “prove” against modern science.
- Cradle of the human race: anatomically modern Homo sapiens originated in Africa around 300,000 years ago. The earliest known fossils are from Jebel Irhoud, Morocco (Hublin et al., Nature, 2017). Humans only reached India around 65,000 years ago.
- Birthplace of human speech: the origin of language is unknown and probably unrecoverable. No serious linguist places it in India.
- Sanskrit as mother of Europe’s languages: false. Sanskrit and the European languages are siblings, both descended from Proto-Indo-European on the Pontic-Caspian steppe (Narasimhan et al., Science, 2019; David Reich, Who We Are and How We Got Here, Pantheon, 2018).
- Mother of “much of our mathematics through the Arabs”: this part is partly true. The decimal place-value system and zero did travel India to Baghdad to Europe, as we saw in Chapter 3.
5The Debunk and the Honest Picture
The Twain and Durant quotes are sincere, real, and reflect a strand of late-19th and early-20th century Western admiration for Indian civilisation that genuinely existed. They are not, however, anthropological evidence. They are travel writing and political pamphleteering, by writers who loved India and had two months and one short visit between them.
And here is the deeper problem with using them as proof: if “Twain said it” is the standard for what counts as evidence, then by the same standard Twain’s Innocents Abroad would prove that the Holy Land in 1867 was a desolate wasteland of no historical importance. We do not use Twain that way for any other country. We should not use him that way for India either.
India’s real story is more interesting than its tourist brochure. We do not need the brochure.
10Everything Is in the Vedas (Sarvam Vede Pratishthitam)
Sarvam Vede Pratishthitam — everything is established in the Vedas. Atomic theory, genetics, robotics, the internet, nuclear weapons, aviation, plastic surgery, in-vitro fertilisation, television, satellites — all of modern science was already there, in the four Vedas, thousands of years ago. Western scientists simply rediscovered what was lost. The Vedas are a complete encyclopaedia of all knowledge.
1Where It Came From
The “all science is in the Vedas” thesis was popularised by Dayananda Saraswati, founder of the Arya Samaj, in Satyarth Prakash (first published 1875, revised in his lifetime up to 1882). It was developed by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya and in the 20th and 21st centuries by Subhash Kak, David Frawley (Vamadeva Shastri), and Rajiv Malhotra. In politics it was carried by Murli Manohar Joshi (BJP HRD Minister 1998 to 2004), Dinanath Batra (whose textbooks entered the Gujarat state curriculum on 30 June 2014), and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who on 25 October 2014, inaugurating Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, said Ganesha’s elephant head proved ancient Indians knew plastic surgery and Karna’s birth proved knowledge of genetic science.
The high-water mark was the 102nd Indian Science Congress, held at the Kalina Campus of Mumbai University from 3 to 7 January 2015. On 4 January 2015, retired pilot-training-school principal Anand J. Bodas and Mumbai school lecturer Ameya Jadhav presented a paper claiming Vedic-era aviation, based on the Vaimanika Shastra.
2What “Sarvam Vede Pratishthitam” Actually Is
The phrase is not a verse from any of the four Vedas (Rig, Sama, Yajur, Atharva). It is a later apologetic formula. It is sometimes loosely associated with Manusmriti 2.6 to 2.7 (which says the Veda is the root of dharma, not of all knowledge) and with Atharvaveda 10.7.20 and 10.8.6 (which describe the cosmic pillar, skambha, not a literal storehouse of all sciences).
The Vedas themselves are ritual hymn collections (samhitas), composed roughly between 1500 and 500 BCE. They contain superb cosmological speculation (the Nasadiya Sukta, Rigveda 10.129), medicinal incantations (Atharvaveda), praises of gods, sacrificial liturgy, and astronomy adequate for timing rituals (the Vedanga Jyotisha, dated by mainstream Indology to the last few centuries BCE). They do not contain atomic chemistry, genetics, electronics, aviation, or nuclear physics.
3The Vaimanika Shastra Problem
The Vaimanika Shastra, the supposed proof of Vedic aviation, was dictated by Pandit Subbaraya Shastry of Anekal, near Bangalore, to G. Venkatachala Sharma between 1 August 1918 and 23 August 1923. It was first translated into English by G. R. Josyer in 1973. The 1974 study by H. S. Mukunda, S. M. Deshpande, H. R. Nagendra, A. Prabhu and S. P. Govindaraju of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, published as “A Critical Study of the Work ’Vyamanika Shastra’” in Scientific Opinion (1974), examined the text’s machine descriptions and concluded that the designs given are aeronautically impossible — they would not fly. The text is not Vedic. It is not ancient. It is from the early twentieth century.
4The Real History of the Inventions Claimed
For the record, with names and dates:
- Atomic theory: John Dalton, A New System of Chemical Philosophy, 1808. Refined by J. J. Thomson (electron, 1897), Ernest Rutherford (nucleus, 1911), Niels Bohr (1913), and quantum mechanics by Heisenberg and Schrödinger, 1925 to 1926.
- Genetics: Gregor Mendel’s pea-plant paper, 1866. DNA structure by James Watson and Francis Crick, Nature, 25 April 1953, building on Rosalind Franklin’s Photograph 51.
- Aviation: the Wright brothers, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, 17 December 1903.
- Robotics: term coined by Karel Čapek’s 1920 play R.U.R. (the word “roboti” suggested by his brother Josef). First industrial robot Unimate, installed at General Motors in 1961 by George Devol and Joseph Engelberger.
- The internet: ARPANET’s first message, UCLA to Stanford Research Institute, 29 October 1969 (Leonard Kleinrock, Vint Cerf, Bob Kahn). TCP/IP standardised 1 January 1983. World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN, 1989 to 1991.
- Nuclear weapons: fission discovered by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann, December 1938; explained by Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch, 1939; Trinity test, Alamogordo, New Mexico, 16 July 1945.
None of these are documented as having any derivation from Vedic texts.
5The Honest Picture (and the Real Indian Contributions)
India’s real scientific achievements are world-class and need no inflation. The decimal place-value system with zero is genuinely Indian (Brahmagupta, Brahmasphutasiddhanta, 628 CE). Aryabhata (476 to 550 CE) gave an excellent approximation of pi and a partial heliocentric leaning in his planetary models. The Sushruta Samhita (in its surviving form c. 600 BCE to 500 CE) describes real rhinoplasty and more than 300 surgical procedures, and reached modern plastic surgery directly via Joseph Carpue’s 1816 London report on the “Indian method”. The Vaisheshika school (Kanada, c. 6th to 2nd century BCE) proposed qualitative atomism — an admirable philosophical insight, though not Dalton’s quantitative chemistry. Panini’s Ashtadhyayi is a landmark of formal systems thinking.
Meera Nanda, Prophets Facing Backward: Postmodern Critiques of Science and Hindu Nationalism in India (Rutgers University Press, 2003), and Science in Saffron (Three Essays Collective, 2016), and astrophysicist Jayant V. Narlikar, in his Frontline and Economic and Political Weekly essays critiquing the 2015 Science Congress aviation paper, have spent careers carefully separating real Indian achievements from inflated ones. We can do the same.
The Vedas are a beautiful, ancient, ritual and philosophical literature. They are not a complete encyclopaedia of all science. Saying so does not insult them. Pretending so does.
What Part 10 Tried to Do
Every chapter in this part was painful to write. Painful because each forged quote, each invented theft, is a small act of love for India by someone who genuinely wanted to defend her against centuries of colonial humiliation. The motivation is rarely bad. The result is.
The result is a generation of Indian students who walk into a science class and either tune out (because they have been told modern science is just a Western theft from us, so why study it) or feel quietly embarrassed when they discover, at 19 or 25 or 40, that the Einstein quote they cited in school was forged in 1997 on the internet. Both outcomes are bad for India.
The real history is brighter than the forged one. Aryabhata. Brahmagupta. Bhaskaracharya. Panini. Sushruta. Madhava of Sangamagrama, who anticipated parts of calculus by two centuries. Tagore. Bose. Ramanujan. Raman. Saha. Bhabha. Khorana. These are real Indian names attached to real contributions. They do not require Pythagoras to have walked to the Ganges, or Newton to have read Sanskrit, or Einstein to have praised our counting. The minute we let go of the forgeries, the real list becomes visible.
If we love India, we should be willing to count to ten without a fake Einstein.

What’s Next
Part 11 will be the final volume in this series. It will draw together the lessons of the previous ten parts, lay out a glossary of every named text, person, and term used across the series, and close with a personal note about what we can and cannot ask of India’s heritage. It is the only part of the series I cannot debunk — because it is a summing-up, not a claim.
