And this set is the loudest of all. Whenever a politician wants to sound impressive about ancient India, they reach for weapons and physics. Brahmastra is a nuclear bomb. Mohenjo Daro got vapourised. The Vedas already had E equals m c squared. Newton stole gravity from Bhaskaracharya. Dalton stole atoms from Kanada. These claims are very dramatic. They are also, almost without exception, wrong.
I want to be careful in this part for a specific reason. Some of these claims sit on a tiny seed of real history. Kanada did write about anu, the smallest indivisible thing, around 2,500 years ago. Bhaskaracharya did write a sentence about objects falling toward the earth in the 12th century. Sayana did write a verse commentary in the 14th century that mentions the speed of sunlight. These are real pieces of Indian intellectual history. They are also not the same thing as modern atomic theory, modern gravitation, or the modern speed of light.
The bhakt move is to take the real seed and inflate it until it sounds like a modern textbook. That is the move we are going to take apart here. I will give credit where credit is due. And I will mock the inflation where the inflation is happening. Same as always. Target is the lie. Not the lamp.

1Brahmastra Was a Nuclear Weapon
The Brahmastra described in the Mahabharata is a nuclear weapon. The descriptions of a single arrow destroying entire armies, of a brilliant light brighter than a thousand suns, of soldiers’ hair and nails falling out afterwards, of poisoned water for generations, all match the effects of a modern atomic bomb. Ancient India therefore had nuclear weapons. J. Robert Oppenheimer himself quoted the Gita at the Trinity test, which proves he knew.
Where It Came From
The Brahmastra appears across the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and various Puranas. It is one of the most famous weapons in Hindu mythology. The nuclear weapon comparison is much newer. It traces back to the 1970s, when writers like Erich von Däniken (the Swiss author of Chariots of the Gods?) and later David Davenport, in his 1996 book 2000 BC: Atomic Destruction, popularised the idea that ancient Indian epics described nuclear war.
These were not Indian writers. They were European pseudo archaeology enthusiasts who used Indian texts to push a wider “ancient astronaut” theory. Indian Hindutva voices later picked the framing up and dropped the alien part. The Brahmastra equals nuclear bomb idea is now a stock claim in Indian school textbooks and political speeches.
The Oppenheimer quote is real. After the Trinity test on 16 July 1945, the American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who had studied Sanskrit at Berkeley, said the line from the Bhagavad Gita 11:32: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” This is documented. He said it years later in a 1965 NBC television interview. He was quoting a poetic line, not declaring that the Manhattan Project rediscovered an ancient secret.
What the Original Text Actually Says
Here is how the Mahabharata describes a Brahmastra discharge, in Book 8 (the Karna Parva) and Book 10 (the Sauptika Parva), Bibek Debroy’s English translation based on the BORI Critical Edition.
- It is a magical weapon, summoned by chanting a specific mantra.
- It is given to a warrior by a god (often Brahma or Shiva), as a divine gift.
- It has to be invoked with a mantra and can be withdrawn only with another mantra, which not all warriors know. (Arjuna’s son Abhimanyu, famously, did not know how to withdraw it.)
- It can be neutralised by another Brahmastra fired in the opposite direction.
- Its effects include flash brightness, destruction of armies, and, in some passages, environmental damage afterwards (dead foetuses, contaminated land).
The descriptions are vivid. They are also vague. “Brighter than a thousand suns” is a phrase that could fit any extremely bright phenomenon. A comet, a meteor, a forest fire, lightning, an exaggerated battle scene. The text does not describe the mechanism. There is no mention of splitting atoms, of uranium or plutonium, of critical mass, of fission or fusion, of any radioactive material. It is described as a magical weapon activated by a chant.
The Real Science
A nuclear bomb works by splitting the nuclei of heavy atoms (fission, like uranium-235 or plutonium-239) or fusing the nuclei of light atoms (fusion, like hydrogen). Both release enormous energy because of Einstein’s E=mc². The bomb requires very pure fissile material, a precise critical mass, a fast assembly mechanism (gun-type or implosion), and a neutron initiator. Without these specific elements, you do not get a nuclear explosion. You can get a fire. You can get an explosion from chemicals. But you cannot get a fission chain reaction.
The first nuclear weapon was tested at Trinity on 16 July 1945. It used about 6 kilograms of plutonium-239 assembled by precise explosive lenses. The bombs at Hiroshima (6 August 1945, uranium gun-type, “Little Boy”) and Nagasaki (9 August 1945, plutonium implosion, “Fat Man”) killed roughly 140,000 and 80,000 people respectively by year’s end. India tested its first nuclear device in 1974 (Smiling Buddha at Pokhran) and a thermonuclear-capable series in 1998.
The Debunk
- “Bright light and dead soldiers” describes literally any battle. The Mahabharata’s other weapons, from ordinary maces and arrows, also kill many. “Brighter than a thousand suns” is a poetic flourish, not a technical specification. The phrase, by the way, is from a Vedic hymn about the actual sun, and Oppenheimer borrowed it because it sounded biblical.
- No specific nuclear mechanism is described. The text does not mention any radioactive material, any chain reaction, any critical mass. It mentions a chant. Chanting is not how nuclear weapons work.
- The Brahmastra is given by gods. A nuclear weapon is built by humans, in factories, from specific minerals. If a god personally hands you a weapon when you do penance, that is not nuclear engineering, that is theology.
- “Neutralised by another Brahmastra” is unlike any real weapon. Modern nuclear weapons cannot be “cancelled out” by firing a second nuclear weapon at them. If two Brahmastras meet and both annihilate each other harmlessly, that is magic, not physics.
- No archaeological evidence of nuclear war exists in India. We will discuss Mohenjo Daro in the next chapter. But across the entire Indian subcontinent, two centuries of excavation has produced no fused-glass crater, no plutonium contamination layer, no shadow-burned outlines of bodies. None of the physical evidence we know follows nuclear detonations has ever been found.
- The Oppenheimer quote proves the opposite of what bhakts claim. A 20th century American physicist quoted a piece of Sanskrit poetry he had studied. That does not show ancient nuclear weapons existed. It shows that a literate physicist with a Sanskrit hobby found one ancient line that captured his mood. By the same logic, the line is also “proof” of Sanskrit philosophy, of Krishna’s divinity, and of a thousand other things. It proves none of them. It is just a quote.
The Honest Picture
India does have real nuclear achievements. They are recent, hard-earned, and Indian.
- 1948. Atomic Energy Commission of India founded under Homi J. Bhabha. Genuine pioneer of Indian physics.
- 1954. Department of Atomic Energy established.
- 1974. Pokhran-I (“Smiling Buddha”), India’s first nuclear test, conducted under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
- 1998. Pokhran-II series of five tests, including a claimed thermonuclear device. India officially becomes a nuclear weapons state.
- Today. India has a fully developed nuclear power industry, an indigenous fast-breeder reactor programme at Kalpakkam, and a credible minimum deterrent under the “No First Use” doctrine.
Indian nuclear physics is real. It is the work of Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, Raja Ramanna, Anil Kakodkar, R. Chidambaram, and many others. It built on quantum mechanics, fission chemistry, and reactor engineering. It did not derive anything from the Mahabharata. The Mahabharata is one of the greatest epics in world literature, and the Bhagavad Gita is one of the deepest philosophical dialogues ever recorded. Neither needs to also be a nuclear weapons manual to be important.

2Mohenjo Daro and the “Radioactive” Skeletons
Mohenjo Daro, the great Indus Valley city, was destroyed by an ancient nuclear war. Hundreds of skeletons were found scattered in the streets, frozen mid-step. The skeletons are highly radioactive, far above normal levels. Layers of vitrified (melted) bricks have been found, consistent with extreme heat. This proves the Mahabharata’s nuclear war was real and happened at Mohenjo Daro.
Where It Came From
This claim sounds specific. It is also almost entirely fabricated. Let us trace it carefully.
The Mohenjo Daro nuclear theory traces back to David Davenport, a British researcher, and his 1979 book 2000 A.C. Distruzione Atomica (later translated to English in 1996 as 2000 BC: Atomic Destruction). Davenport claimed that he had found vitrified ruins and high radiation levels at Mohenjo Daro. He had not, in any peer-reviewed archaeological sense, found anything of the sort. He visited the site and made the claim. No measurement data was published in any scientific journal.
The claim was picked up and amplified by Erich von Däniken in his ancient astronaut series. Indian audiences encountered it mainly through Hindi-language documentaries in the 1990s and 2000s, and through 2010s WhatsApp forwards.
What the Actual Archaeology Says
Mohenjo Daro has been carefully excavated by professional archaeologists since 1922 (R.D. Banerji), continued by Sir John Marshall (1925 to 1931), and later by E.J.H. Mackay, Mortimer Wheeler, George Dales, and many others. Pakistan and international teams continue work today. This is among the most thoroughly excavated ancient sites in South Asia.
Here is what they actually found.
- A total of about 37 to 44 skeletons across all excavations from the 1920s onward. Not hundreds. Not thousands. Roughly forty. Found in scattered locations across multiple seasons and trenches.
- The skeletons were not “frozen mid step” or “lying as if killed instantly.” Most were in informal burials, sometimes hasty, in pits in courtyards or alleys. A few showed signs of trauma. None showed the characteristic burn patterns of nuclear or even severe fire damage.
- No abnormal radiation has ever been measured at Mohenjo Daro. The site has been visited by physicists. No published study reports radioactivity above natural background levels for the local Sindhi soil. Davenport’s claim has never been replicated, because there is nothing to replicate.
- Vitrified bricks have not been found at Mohenjo Daro. They have been found at other sites in other parts of the world (some hillforts in Scotland, for example, due to intense burning of timber and stone, an entirely chemical process). Mohenjo Daro’s bricks are kiln fired in the normal way of the Indus Valley. They are not melted.
The mainstream archaeological consensus on why Mohenjo Daro declined, championed by scholars like Gregory Possehl in The Indus Civilization: A Contemporary Perspective (2002), is much less dramatic. The civilization gradually weakened between roughly 1900 and 1700 BCE due to a combination of factors: shifts in the monsoon, the drying of the Saraswati and other rivers, possible flooding events, and changes in trade routes. The cities were not destroyed in a single catastrophic event. They emptied out over many generations as people migrated east toward the Ganges plain.
The Real Science
Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the Trinity site, and the various Soviet, French, British, and Indian test sites all share a few clear physical signatures. The ground in the immediate hypocentre is fused into a glassy substance (the Trinity test left a green glass called “trinitite”). Buildings closest to ground zero show “shadow” effects, where their outlines are burned into the ground by the flash. Steel beams melt or warp. Radioactive isotopes (cesium 137, strontium 90, plutonium 239 traces) are present in measurable quantities and remain detectable for centuries. None of these features have been found at Mohenjo Daro.
The Debunk
- The “hundreds of skeletons” number is wrong. The actual number is about 37 to 44. This is not nuclear war scale. It is more consistent with disease, malnutrition, or a small-scale local incident.
- The “high radiation” claim is unsupported. No published radiation measurement at Mohenjo Daro shows abnormal levels. Davenport’s claim is based on his own assertion, not on lab data.
- The “vitrified bricks” claim is conflated with other unrelated sites. Mohenjo Daro’s bricks are normal Indus Valley fired bricks. Whoever started this rumour appears to have confused Mohenjo Daro with vitrified Scottish hillforts (which are also not nuclear, just intensely burned over years).
- The actual decline of the Indus Valley civilization is well studied and gradual. It took roughly two centuries, occurred across thousands of kilometres, and shows no signs of a single moment of catastrophic destruction. This is the opposite of what a nuclear blast would leave.
- The Mahabharata story does not mention Mohenjo Daro. The Mahabharata war is traditionally located at Kurukshetra in present-day Haryana, roughly 1,000 kilometres from Mohenjo Daro. Even if you took the Brahmastra story literally, it would not be Mohenjo Daro. The bhakt has invented a connection that the original story does not make.
The Honest Picture
The Indus Valley civilization (also called the Harappan civilization) is one of the most genuinely impressive ancient societies in human history. From roughly 2600 to 1900 BCE, it covered an area larger than ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia at its peak. Key real achievements:
- Urban planning at scale. Cities like Mohenjo Daro and Harappa had grid layouts, standardised brick sizes, citywide drainage and sewage, and public granaries.
- Standardised weights and measures. Indus Valley weights are remarkably uniform across the entire civilization. Trade went as far as Mesopotamia.
- Sanitation. Most houses had access to a private bathing area connected to a covered drainage system. This level of sanitation would not be matched in many Western cities until the 19th century CE.
- Writing. The Indus script remains undeciphered, but it shows evidence of a real writing system. Thousands of seals have been found.
This is the real Indus Valley story. It does not need to also be a nuclear war crime scene to be worth celebrating. The bhakt who pushes the radioactive skeleton claim is, in effect, ignoring the actual ancient Indian achievement (city planning, sanitation, urban civilization) in favour of a fake claim (nuclear war) that brings shame rather than pride if you think about it for two minutes.

3Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra as a Guided Missile
Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra, the spinning disc weapon, is a guided missile with target-tracking capability. It homes in on its target, destroys it, and boomerangs back to the wielder. This proves ancient India had cruise missiles.
Where It Came From
The Sudarshan Chakra is genuinely ancient. It appears in the Vedas, the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and many Puranas. It is one of Vishnu’s primary attributes. Krishna also uses it in the Mahabharata.
The “guided missile” framing is modern. It was most famously stated by G. Nageshwar Rao, the Vice Chancellor of Andhra University, at the 106th Indian Science Congress in January 2019. (Yes, the same one who gave us Ravana’s 24 vimanas in Part 2.) He explicitly said the Sudarshan Chakra was a guided missile that tracked targets and returned. The clip went viral. Real scientists at the Congress publicly distanced themselves.
What the Original Text Actually Says
The Sudarshan Chakra is described as:
- A spinning disc with razor sharp edges, often shown with a thousand spokes.
- Forged by the divine architect Vishvakarma. In some texts, given to Vishnu by Shiva.
- Activated by Vishnu’s will or by chanting a mantra. Krishna uses it to behead Shishupala in the Mahabharata. Vishnu uses it in many Puranic stories.
- Operated mentally. The user thinks about who to kill, and the chakra goes. It returns by the user’s will.
- Capable of destroying mountains, drying oceans, and killing demons that no other weapon can kill.
The chakra is described as a magical, divine, mentally-controlled weapon. No mention of fuel, sensors, electronics, propulsion, or any other component of a guided missile. It is, in the original text, exactly the kind of object you would expect a god to have.
The Real Science
A guided missile has at least three components: a propulsion system (typically a solid or liquid rocket motor), a guidance system (GPS, inertial navigation, infrared seeker, radar, or another form of target tracking), and a warhead (explosive or kinetic). Modern cruise missiles such as the Tomahawk also need fuel, control surfaces, and an onboard computer. The first practical guided missile was the German V-2 in 1944. India’s Brahmos cruise missile, jointly developed with Russia, became operational in 2005. None of these technologies existed before the 20th century.
The Debunk
- Mental control is not target tracking. A guided missile uses sensors and computers to find its target. The Sudarshan Chakra is steered by Vishnu’s will. Vishnu is, in the texts, all-knowing and all-seeing. So of course the chakra “finds” its target. Because Vishnu sent it. This is theology, not engineering.
- “Returns to the wielder” requires reusable propulsion. A real boomerang only works for short distances and uses aerodynamics. A weapon that flies to a target, kills it, and flies back, requires fuel for both legs and a re-aiming system for the return leg. The chakra does this by, again, Vishnu’s will. Not a propulsion system.
- No mechanism is described. The Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Puranas never mention a fuel source, a control system, or any internal component of the chakra. It is just a sharp spinning disc that does what Vishnu wants.
- Vishnu’s other weapons are equally “magical.” His mace (Kaumodaki), conch (Panchajanya), and bow (Sharanga) all have similar supernatural properties. If we treat the chakra as evidence of guided missiles, we have to treat the conch as evidence of psychological warfare loudspeakers and the bow as evidence of energy weapons. We do not. We accept they are mythological attributes of a god.
The Honest Picture
India has real guided missile achievements. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has produced a credible domestic missile programme. Highlights:
- Prithvi series (1988 onward), short-range ballistic missiles.
- Agni series (1989 onward), medium and intercontinental range ballistic missiles. Agni-V (3,500 to 5,500 km range) was first tested in 2012.
- BrahMos (operational 2005), supersonic cruise missile, joint India-Russia development. One of the world’s fastest operational cruise missiles.
- Akash medium-range surface-to-air missile system, operational since 2014.
- Astra air-to-air missile, integrated on Indian Air Force fighters from the 2010s.
- 2019. Mission Shakti, India successfully tests an anti-satellite (ASAT) missile, becoming the fourth country to do so.
India is the real Vishnu in this metaphor. Modern India sends missiles to real targets, with real propulsion, real guidance, real warheads. Vishnu remains in his temples, where he belongs.

4Pashupatastra and the Hydrogen Bomb
The Pashupatastra, the supreme weapon of Lord Shiva, is described as the most destructive astra of all. It is more powerful than the Brahmastra. Therefore the Pashupatastra is a thermonuclear hydrogen bomb. Arjuna received it from Shiva himself in the Mahabharata.
Where It Came From
Pashupatastra appears in the Mahabharata’s Vana Parva (Book 3). Arjuna performs intense penance to please Shiva, fights Shiva in the form of a hunter (the Kirata episode), and is finally granted the weapon. The story is one of the most beloved in the epic.
The “hydrogen bomb” framing follows directly from the Brahmastra-as-fission-bomb claim. The logic is mechanical: if Brahmastra is the basic atomic bomb, then a more powerful astra must be a more powerful bomb, therefore a thermonuclear weapon. None of this reasoning has anything to do with the actual content of the text.
What the Original Text Actually Says
The Mahabharata says of the Pashupatastra:
- It is given by Shiva to Arjuna as a reward for sustained penance and combat.
- It can destroy the universe. (Yes, literally. The whole universe.)
- It is so powerful that it should never be used against an opponent weaker than oneself, and never against ordinary mortals.
- Arjuna never actually uses it during the Kurukshetra war. He keeps it in reserve. It stays unused.
- It is invoked by chanting a specific mantra given by Shiva.
This is, again, classic divine weapon literature. A god gives a hero a weapon that could destroy the universe. The hero is warned not to use it casually. The hero respects the warning. The weapon stays sheathed.
The Real Science
A thermonuclear weapon, also called a hydrogen bomb, has two stages. The first stage is a small fission bomb, which acts like a trigger. The intense heat and X-ray pressure from the fission stage compresses a second stage containing hydrogen isotopes (deuterium and tritium). At extreme temperatures and pressures, the hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium, releasing far more energy than fission alone. The first thermonuclear test was the American “Ivy Mike” in 1952. India’s claimed thermonuclear test was part of Pokhran-II in May 1998 (though some Indian scientists, notably K. Santhanam, have disputed how successful the thermonuclear stage actually was).
The Debunk
- “Destroys the universe” is not a hydrogen bomb specification. A real H-bomb destroys a city. The Pashupatastra is described as universe-ending. If you take this literally, it is not a thermonuclear weapon. It is fantasy.
- Arjuna never uses it. The whole point of the story is that he holds it in reserve. A weapon that is described in detail, given by a god, and then never fired, is a narrative device, not a piece of working technology. Imagine the bhakt’s claim if Arjuna had actually deployed the Pashupatastra against Karna. What would be left? The Pandavas? The earth? The universe is supposed to end. Nothing would be left for the Bhagavad Gita to address.
- The activation method is a mantra. Shiva teaches Arjuna a specific chant. Arjuna recites it correctly and the weapon manifests. This is the same magical mechanism as every other astra in the epic. Mantras are not thermonuclear triggers.
- The “Pashupatastra equals hydrogen bomb” claim only works if you’ve already accepted “Brahmastra equals atomic bomb.” We just dismantled that in Chapter 1. Once that falls, every claim built on it falls.
The Honest Picture
The Kirata episode where Arjuna receives the Pashupatastra is, on its own terms, one of the great scenes in world literature. The themes are profound. Pride before transcendence. The willingness to fight even a god. The earned versus the gifted. The hunter Shiva tests Arjuna not by being kind, but by being a worthy adversary.
Reading this scene as if it were a description of weapons development misses the actual depth of the text. The Mahabharata is not the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project is not the Mahabharata. They occupy different categories of human achievement. One is poetry. The other is engineering. Both are important. Conflating them honours neither.

5The Other Astras. Agneyastra, Varunastra, and the Rest
The Mahabharata describes dozens of named astras (divine weapons). Each corresponds to a specific modern military technology. Agneyastra is a thermobaric or napalm weapon. Varunastra is a water-based weapon, like a torpedo or fire suppression bomb. Vayavyastra is a sonic or pressure weapon. Indrastra creates a rain of arrows, like cluster munitions. This proves that ancient India had a full spectrum of modern weapon systems.
Where It Came From
The astras are real elements of Sanskrit epic literature. They appear across the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Puranas. The categorisation “each astra equals one modern weapon system” is recent, popularised online from roughly 2010 onward, often in defence-themed Indian YouTube channels.
What the Original Text Actually Says
Here is what the Mahabharata says about a few of these named astras.
Agneyastra (fire weapon). Creates flames. Used by various warriors. Said to scorch the enemy. Sometimes neutralised by Varunastra (water weapon). The text describes flames, not napalm chemistry. Flames are not unique to thermobaric weapons. They are unique to fire.
Varunastra (water weapon). Produces water, floods, or rain. Used to extinguish Agneyastra. The text describes water appearing, sometimes in great quantities. Water is not unique to torpedoes. Water has been a weapon since people learned to flood enemy camps thousands of years ago.
Vayavyastra (wind weapon). Produces winds, sometimes a strong gust. Knocks enemies down. The text does not describe sonic frequencies or atmospheric pressure waves. It describes wind.
Indrastra (Indra’s weapon). Causes a “rain of arrows” or general missiles to fall from the sky. The text describes arrows. Not submunitions. Not cluster bomblets. Arrows.
The pattern is clear. Each astra controls one of the elemental forces (fire, water, wind, etc.) at a magical scale. They are described in elemental terms, not in engineering terms. The bhakt who maps each one to a modern weapon system is reading the modern system back into the ancient text.
The Real Science
A thermobaric weapon disperses a cloud of fuel and then ignites it, creating a massive overpressure wave. Famous example: the Russian TOS-1. An incendiary weapon like napalm sprays burning chemicals; it is not the same as thermobaric. A cluster munition releases many small submunitions over an area; it is mechanical, not “rain of arrows” magical. Each of these has a specific physical and chemical mechanism. None of the astras in the text describe any of these mechanisms.
The Debunk
- “Fire weapon” is not the same as napalm. Fire has been used as a weapon since the bronze age. Greek fire, used by the Byzantines from the 7th century CE, was a real fire-based weapon. Calling Agneyastra “thermobaric” requires you to add chemistry that the text never mentions.
- “Water weapon” is not a torpedo. A torpedo is a self-propelled underwater missile invented by Robert Whitehead in 1866. Varunastra is described as producing water magically, not as launching a propelled underwater weapon.
- Each astra’s effect is elemental, not engineered. The Mahabharata describes outcomes (fire, water, wind, arrows). It does not describe how to produce these outcomes mechanically. Without a mechanism, you cannot claim engineering.
- The astras are activated by mantras given by gods or learned from sages. Same delivery method as all the other divine weapons we have covered. Chanting is not weapons design.
- The “spectrum of modern weapon systems” claim is a retrofit. Ancient Indians did not name their astras “thermobaric” or “torpedo” or “cluster munition.” The modern weapon categories did not exist as concepts. The bhakt is reading 21st-century military taxonomy back into a 4th-century BCE epic.
The Honest Picture
Ancient India did have real military technology. Some highlights from the actual historical record:
- Steel. Wootz steel, produced in southern India from around 300 BCE, was traded across the Mediterranean and Middle East. It became the basis for Damascus steel. This is real metallurgical achievement.
- War elephants. A real Indian military innovation. The Greeks under Alexander encountered them and were impressed.
- Cavalry tactics and chariots. Real, well-documented elements of ancient Indian warfare.
- Fortification. The Arthashastra by Chanakya (around 300 BCE) contains real and sophisticated discussions of military strategy, fortification, and statecraft.
- Modern DRDO. Today, India produces serious indigenous weapons. We already covered the Agni and BrahMos missiles in Chapter 3. India also makes its own tanks (Arjun), fighter jets (Tejas), submarines (Arihant class), and aircraft carriers (Vikrant).
None of this needs the astras to be real weapons. The astras are part of a magnificent literary tradition. Indian military achievement, real military achievement, runs from Wootz steel to BrahMos. That is the actual story.

6“E=mc² Is Already in the Vedas”
Albert Einstein’s famous equation E equals m c squared, the foundation of modern physics, was already known to the Vedic seers thousands of years ago. Stephen Hawking himself confirmed that the Vedas contain a theory superior to Einstein’s. The Vedic verse expressing this is hidden in plain sight in the Yajurveda or the Atharvaveda, depending on which version of the claim you hear.
Where It Came From
This claim has a specific and recent origin. On 3 January 2015, at the 102nd Indian Science Congress held at the University of Mumbai, India’s then-Minister for Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan stated from the podium that “We had Vedic theorems by which we knew the Pythagoras theorem. Our scientists discovered the Pythagoras theorem, but we sympathetically gave its credit to the Greeks. Algebra was discovered in our country, but we gave its credit to the Arabs. Likewise, our mathematicians and scientists had discovered the theorem behind E=mc², much before Albert Einstein.”
He also indicated that Stephen Hawking had supposedly endorsed this view. This is false. The Stephen Hawking Foundation, when asked, denied that Hawking had ever made any such statement. The Wire, Scroll.in, and several international outlets including The Guardian and Science magazine reported the falsehood. The Foundation made it explicit: Hawking had said nothing of the kind.
The minister’s claim has not been retracted. It continues to circulate.
What the Original Text Actually Says
No verse in the Vedas states E=mc². I have looked. Sanskrit scholars have looked. The Yajurveda, Rigveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda are extensive texts. Together they contain tens of thousands of verses. None of them contain anything that, when honestly translated, equates energy with mass times the speed of light squared.
Bhakts who push this claim sometimes point to specific verses about cosmic creation, light, or vibration. None of these verses, when read in context, are about energy-mass equivalence. They are about creation, dawn, the act of sacrifice, or the praise of specific deities. They are religious poetry. Their value is religious and literary.
To get E=mc² out of them, you have to (a) translate ambiguously, (b) cherry-pick words like “energy” or “matter” that did not exist in their modern scientific senses in Vedic Sanskrit, and (c) ignore the actual context. This is the translation sleight-of-hand from Part 1, Trick 04.
The Real Science
Einstein’s famous equation, published in 1905 as part of his special theory of relativity, says that the energy (E) contained in a body at rest equals its mass (m) multiplied by the speed of light (c) squared. Because c is about 300,000 km per second, c squared is a very large number (about 9 with 16 zeros after it in SI units). This means a tiny amount of mass corresponds to an enormous amount of energy. This is why nuclear bombs are so powerful, and why the sun shines (it converts about 4 million tonnes of mass into energy every second). The equation predicts specific, testable numbers. It is not a metaphor.
Einstein derived E=mc² as a consequence of two postulates of special relativity: that the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames, and that the speed of light is the same for all observers. From these, he derived time dilation, length contraction, mass-energy equivalence, and the relativistic energy-momentum relation. The full derivation requires algebra and a clear definition of inertial frames. It is not something that could be expressed in a Vedic verse without the entire conceptual scaffolding behind it.
The Debunk
- Show me the verse. No bhakt has ever produced an actual Vedic verse that, in any honest translation, states E=mc² with all three quantities present and a clear relation. This is a 200-year-old equation. Anyone who claims it exists in the Vedas should be able to point to chapter and verse. They cannot.
- The Hawking endorsement is fabricated. The Stephen Hawking Foundation officially denied it. The minister claimed it from a stage in 2015. No source for the alleged Hawking statement has ever been produced.
- The equation requires concepts that the Vedas did not have. The Vedas do not define “energy” in the joule sense. They do not define “mass” in the kilogram sense. They do not define “speed of light” as a precise constant. Without these definitions, you cannot have the equation. You can only have vague poetic resemblances, which is exactly Trick 01 from Part 1.
- If E=mc² had been in the Vedas, India would have built nuclear weapons before 1945. The equation is what makes nuclear weapons possible in principle. If ancient Indian sages had derived it, the actual engineering would have followed within a few centuries, the way it followed within forty years of Einstein’s 1905 paper. India tested its first nuclear device in 1974. The gap between knowing the equation and building the bomb does not exceed a century or so in any real scientific civilisation.
The Honest Picture
India has produced extraordinary modern physicists. Some of the people who matter:
- C.V. Raman. 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics, for the Raman effect (the scattering of light by molecules, the basis for an entire field of spectroscopy). The first Asian Nobel laureate in physics. Real, documented, world-class science.
- Satyendra Nath Bose. Co-developer of Bose-Einstein statistics with Einstein himself. The boson, a fundamental particle category, is named after him. Bose worked at Dhaka University and Calcutta University in the 1920s.
- Meghnad Saha. Developed the Saha ionization equation in 1920, foundational to stellar astrophysics.
- Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics, for theoretical work on the structure and evolution of stars (the Chandrasekhar limit).
- Homi J. Bhabha. Founded the Indian nuclear programme.
- Modern Indian physicists. Working at TIFR, IISc, IUCAA, the IITs, and across the world’s top institutions.
These people did not need the Vedas to have done their work. They built on actual physics, the same physics everyone else built on, plus their own creativity and effort. Their Nobel medals and their named equations are real Indian achievement. Inventing a fake Stephen Hawking quote to claim that Vedic sages did it first is not honouring them. It is insulting them.

7The Speed of Light in the Hanuman Chalisa
The Hanuman Chalisa, written by Tulsidas around 1575 CE, contains the exact distance from the Earth to the Sun in one of its verses. The line “Yug sahasra yojan par bhanu, leelyo taahi madhur phal jaanu” translates to “1 yuga + 1,000 yojana = the distance to the Sun.” When you do the math, this gives roughly 96 million miles, almost exactly the modern measurement of 93 million miles. This proves Tulsidas knew the distance to the Sun before modern astronomy. Some versions also claim the same verse encodes the speed of light.
Where It Came From
The Hanuman Chalisa verse is real. It appears in Tulsidas’s Hanuman Chalisa, composed in Awadhi in the late 16th century CE. The verse in context is a hymn praising Hanuman, who as a child mistook the sun for a fruit and tried to eat it.
The “this proves Tulsidas calculated the distance to the Sun” interpretation is much newer. It became popular through Indian WhatsApp forwards starting around 2010, and is now a stock claim in school assemblies, motivational speeches, and political rallies.
What the Original Verse Actually Says
The Awadhi line and a straightforward English translation:
“Yug sahasra yojan par bhanu, leelyo taahi madhur phal jaanu.” (Hanuman Chalisa, verse 18)
Plain translation: “Considering the sun to be a sweet fruit, he leapt towards it across a distance of yug sahasra yojan.”
This is a poetic hymn. The phrase “yug sahasra yojan” is a poetic flourish suggesting a great distance. The verse glorifies Hanuman’s leap. It does not claim to be a measurement.
The bhakt interpretation does this conversion: 1 yug = 12,000 years, 1 sahasra = 1,000, 1 yojan = roughly 8 miles. So yug sahasra yojan = 12,000 × 1,000 × 8 = 96,000,000 miles. The actual Earth-Sun distance is about 93,000,000 miles. Therefore Tulsidas knew it.
The Real Math, and Why This Calculation Falls Apart
Five problems with this calculation, in increasing order of fatality.
- “Yojan” is not a fixed unit. Across different Indian texts and periods, a yojana has been claimed to be anywhere from 5 miles to 15 miles, with various scholars giving different values. The Arthashastra gives one figure, the Puranas give another, regional traditions give a third. You can get any answer you want by adjusting the yojana value. The bhakts pick 8 miles because that’s the value that makes the answer come close to 93 million. They are reverse-engineering, not measuring.
- “Yug sahasra yojan” is a poetic Sanskrit-Awadhi compound, not arithmetic. The phrase is more naturally read as “an enormous, immeasurable distance,” not as a mathematical product to be calculated. Treating it like a multiplication problem is forced.
- 1 yug is not “12,000 years” in any unique sense. In Puranic cosmology, the four yugas (Krita, Treta, Dvapara, Kali) have different lengths totalling 4,320,000 mortal years. The choice of “1 yug = 12,000” is itself a bhakt-friendly approximation. Other respectable values exist.
- The modern Earth-Sun distance varies. The Earth’s orbit is elliptical. The distance ranges from about 91.4 million miles at perihelion to 94.5 million miles at aphelion. The “mean” distance, the astronomical unit (AU), is 92.96 million miles, defined precisely. Tulsidas’s “96 million miles” is off by about 3.3%, which is meaningless for a measurement that he never claimed to be making in the first place.
- Tulsidas was a devotional poet, not an astronomer. The Hanuman Chalisa is a hymn of praise to Hanuman. It was written to be recited in worship, not to record astronomical measurements. The bhakt who claims Tulsidas was secretly an astronomer is ignoring everything else Tulsidas wrote, which is uniformly devotional and literary.
The Real Astronomy
The AU is the average distance from Earth to Sun, defined exactly as 149,597,870,700 metres (about 92,955,807 miles). The first reasonably accurate measurement of this distance was made by Giovanni Cassini in 1672, using parallax observations of Mars. Earlier estimates by Greek and Indian astronomers (Aryabhata, Bhaskara) were of the right order of magnitude but off by factors of 2 to 10. The modern value was refined through 19th and 20th century work, especially radar bouncing off Venus in the 1960s.
Speed of Light Variant
A second version of this claim states that the Hanuman Chalisa, or alternatively a 14th-century Sayana commentary on Rigveda 1.50.4, “encodes” the speed of light at 186,000 miles per second.
Sayana’s commentary (circa 1350 CE) on the verse about the sun god Surya does include a line that mentions speed: “tatha cha smaryate yojananam sahasre dve dve shate dve cha yojane ekena nimishardhena kramamana”, often translated as “thus it is remembered that he traverses 2,202 yojanas in half a nimesha.” The bhakt math: take a specific yojana value, take a specific nimesha value, calculate, get something close to 186,000 miles per second. Subhash Kak made this calculation in a 1998 paper.
Same problems as before. The yojana and nimesha values are not fixed. You can get any answer by tweaking them. Sayana never claimed to be calculating the speed of light, a concept that did not exist until Ole Rømer’s 1676 measurement. He was writing a devotional commentary on a Vedic verse about the sun’s movement. The numerical “coincidence” is engineered by working backwards from the modern answer.
The Debunk
The pattern in both the Hanuman Chalisa and Sayana claims is the same.
- Pick a verse that mentions a great distance or speed.
- Notice that the verse uses traditional Indian units with flexible values.
- Try different combinations of unit values until one combination gets you close to the modern answer.
- Announce that the ancient text “encodes” the modern measurement.
- Do not mention all the combinations that did not work.
This is selection bias. If you allow yojana to range from 5 to 15 miles and nimesha from one-fifth to one-tenth of a second, you can hit almost any number with enough tries. The fact that one combination matches the modern answer is not a measurement, it is a guarantee.
The Honest Picture
Indian astronomy was genuinely remarkable. Aryabhata, around 499 CE, correctly stated that the Earth rotates on its axis and that lunar eclipses are caused by the Earth’s shadow. He calculated the length of the year as 365.358 days, off by only a few hours. Brahmagupta in the 7th century developed sophisticated mathematics. The Kerala school in the 14th to 16th centuries developed power series for trigonometric functions, anticipating elements of calculus.
These are documented Indian contributions, with named astronomers, real texts, real calculations, and real verifiable predictions. They are not buried in poetic hymns to Hanuman. They are in actual astronomy treatises, the Aryabhatiya, the Brahmasphutasiddhanta, the Siddhanta Shiromani. If you want to honour Indian astronomy, honour Aryabhata. Don’t read astronomy into devotional poetry that wasn’t trying to be astronomy.

8Bhaskaracharya Discovered Gravity Before Newton
Bhaskaracharya II, the 12th-century Indian mathematician, discovered gravity 500 years before Isaac Newton. In his 1150 CE treatise Siddhanta Shiromani, Bhaskara wrote a verse explicitly stating that the Earth pulls objects toward itself. Newton just copied this. The British hid Bhaskara’s discovery to claim credit for their own civilisation.
Where It Came From
Bhaskaracharya II (1114 to 1185 CE) is a real and important mathematician and astronomer. He worked at the astronomical observatory at Ujjain. His Siddhanta Shiromani is a major work of Indian astronomy, divided into four parts (Lilavati, Bijaganita, Goladhyaya, and Grahaganita). The first two have been particularly influential in mathematical history.
The “Bhaskaracharya discovered gravity” claim has been around in Indian popular discourse for decades, and was given high-level political endorsement when then-Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned at the 2014 Indian Science Congress that India’s traditions in mathematics and astronomy “predated” European achievements.
What the Original Text Actually Says
The relevant verse from the Siddhanta Shiromani, in the Goladhyaya chapter (on celestial spheres), translated by Indologist Krishnaswami Sharma:
“Objects fall on earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. Therefore the earth, planets, constellations, moon, and sun are held in orbit due to this attraction.”
Bhaskaracharya II, Siddhanta Shiromani, Goladhyaya, circa 1150 CE.This is a genuinely interesting statement. Bhaskara observed that objects fall toward the Earth, attributed this to a force from the Earth, and extended the idea to planetary motion. That is real, documented, and impressive for the 12th century.
But here is what the verse does not say.
- It does not state the inverse square law (gravitational force falls off with the square of the distance).
- It does not say that all masses attract all other masses (universal gravitation).
- It does not give a mathematical formula for the force.
- It does not derive Kepler’s laws of planetary motion from the gravitational principle (Bhaskara could not have, since Kepler lived 500 years later).
- It does not connect the falling of objects on Earth to the orbital motion of the Moon as a single phenomenon (Newton’s famous insight, allegedly inspired by an apple).
The Real Science
Isaac Newton, in his 1687 book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, stated that every mass in the universe attracts every other mass with a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them: F = G m₁m₂/r². The constant G is now measured to about 6.674 × 10⁻¹¹ N⋅m²/kg². From this single equation, Newton derived all of Kepler’s laws of planetary motion, the tides, the precession of the equinoxes, and the parabolic trajectories of projectiles. This is the law of universal gravitation. It is a quantitative, predictive theory.
The Debunk
- “Objects fall toward the Earth” is not the same as “Newton’s law of universal gravitation.” The first is an observation. The second is a quantitative, predictive theory. Bhaskara made the observation. Newton made the theory. These are different things at different levels of scientific maturity.
- Many people noticed that objects fall. Aristotle wrote about it (with a partly wrong theory) in the 4th century BCE. The Persian polymath Ibn al-Haytham discussed gravitation in the 11th century in Cairo. The Italian Galileo Galilei did careful experiments on falling bodies in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Bhaskara is one of many ancient and medieval observers who noted gravity-like phenomena. He is not the unique founder.
- Bhaskara never wrote F = G m₁m₂/r². No verse, no commentary, no derivation. He did not connect gravity to a specific quantitative law. Newton did. This is the actual scientific advance.
- Newton’s Principia is fully documented. It was published in Latin in 1687. The manuscript exists. The development of the theory through Newton’s correspondence with Edmund Halley, Robert Hooke, and others is documented. No part of this development cites or references Bhaskara. Newton built on Galileo, Kepler, Hooke, and Descartes. The “Newton stole from Bhaskara” claim would require a chain of transmission from 12th-century Ujjain to 17th-century Cambridge. There is no evidence for any such chain.
- If anyone “stole” anything in this area, it was the Arabic translations of Indian and Greek mathematics that flowed into Europe via Spain. But these flowed openly through known texts (Al-Khwarizmi’s algebra, Ptolemy’s astronomy). They did not include Bhaskara’s gravity statement, which was not particularly noticed even in Indian astronomy in the centuries after Bhaskara.
The Honest Picture
Bhaskaracharya II is a real and important mathematician. He deserves to be celebrated for what he actually did.
- His Lilavati (1150) is a treatise on arithmetic and geometry that includes problems on permutations, combinations, and Pythagorean triples.
- His Bijaganita includes work on quadratic, cubic, and quartic equations.
- He gave a method for solving the indeterminate equation Nx² + 1 = y² (the chakravala or “cyclic” method), which is genuinely beautiful and was not surpassed in Europe until the 17th century.
- He worked with infinitesimals in calculating instantaneous motion of planets, anticipating ideas later formalised in calculus.
- He correctly stated that division by zero is undefined (more precisely, infinite).
- He observed that the Earth attracts objects.
This is more than enough. Bhaskara was a brilliant mathematician. His insight about Earth attracting objects shows excellent observational reasoning. He just did not write Newton’s Principia 500 years early. Claiming he did insults him by claiming he did less than he did (he did a beautiful chakravala method) and more than he did (he did not derive universal gravitation). Honour him for the actual work.

9Kanada Invented the Atom Before Dalton
Kanada, the founder of the Vaisheshika school of Indian philosophy, invented atomic theory 2,500 years before John Dalton. He wrote that all matter is composed of indivisible particles called “anu,” which is identical to the modern atom. Dalton stole the theory from ancient Indian texts. Therefore atomic chemistry is an Indian invention.
Where It Came From
Kanada (also called Kashyapa) was a real Indian philosopher, traditionally dated to around the 6th century BCE, though some scholars place him as late as the 2nd century BCE. He is the founder of the Vaisheshika school, one of the six classical schools of Hindu philosophy. His foundational text is the Vaisheshika Sutra.
The Kanada-as-atomist claim has been popular in Indian science writing since at least the 19th century. It was given new prominence in the early 2000s through textbook revisions in some Indian states, and through political speeches that frame Kanada as a Vedic-era physicist.
What the Original Text Actually Says
Kanada’s Vaisheshika Sutra does indeed describe a doctrine of anu, often translated as “atom” or “indivisible particle.” The doctrine, in summary:
- All material things are made of anu, which are infinitesimal and indivisible.
- There are four kinds of anu: earth, water, fire, and air (the four classical elements).
- Two anu can combine to form a dvyanuka (dyad). Three dyads combine to form a tryanuka (triad), which is the smallest visible particle. (The classical example is a dust mote in a sunbeam.)
- The anu are eternal. They are neither created nor destroyed.
- Combinations of anu produce all the diversity of the material world.
This is a genuinely interesting philosophical theory. It bears a surface resemblance to atomism. And Kanada deserves real recognition as one of the earliest thinkers to propose indivisible material building blocks.
But surface resemblance is not equivalence. Here is what Kanada’s anu theory is not.
- It does not propose chemical elements in the modern sense. There are four kinds of anu (the classical elements), not 118 (the modern periodic table).
- It does not propose that atoms combine in fixed mass ratios (Dalton’s law of definite proportions).
- It does not give any quantitative atomic weights.
- It does not anticipate the proton, neutron, or electron (discovered in 1917, 1932, and 1897 respectively).
- It does not anticipate the nucleus, quantum mechanics, or the electron shell structure.
The Real Science
John Dalton, in A New System of Chemical Philosophy (1808), proposed five postulates that together became the foundation of modern chemistry. (1) All matter is composed of indivisible atoms. (2) Atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties. (3) Atoms of different elements differ in mass. (4) Atoms combine in simple whole-number ratios to form compounds. (5) In chemical reactions, atoms are rearranged but not created or destroyed. Dalton supported these postulates with experimental data on the law of multiple proportions, observed in actual gas reactions. This was the move from philosophy to chemistry.
Modern atomic theory has of course since been refined enormously. We know atoms are not indivisible (they contain protons, neutrons, electrons, and deeper structure including quarks). We know that elements can be transmuted in nuclear reactions. We know that atomic mass is not perfectly identical across all atoms of an element (isotopes). But the core idea, that all matter is built from discrete units that combine in specific ways, is the foundation of all of chemistry.
The Debunk
- Greeks did it at the same time, independently. Leucippus and Democritus, in the 5th century BCE, developed an atomistic theory of nature. They called the indivisible units atomos (Greek for “uncuttable”). Their theory was also philosophical, also not quantitative, and also not the same as modern atomic theory. If Kanada gets credit, so do they. And neither of them gets credit for Dalton’s work, because Dalton’s work is fundamentally different in being experimentally grounded.
- “Indivisible particle” is not a sufficient definition. Both Kanada and Democritus proposed indivisible particles. But “indivisible” was a philosophical conclusion from arguments about infinite division, not an empirical claim. Modern atomic theory requires quantitative mass relationships, definite proportions, and experimental verification. None of these are in Kanada’s Sutra.
- Dalton’s theory was based on chemistry experiments. He weighed gases, observed combination ratios, and derived laws from data. Kanada’s theory was metaphysical, derived from logical argument. The methods are completely different. Calling them the same theory because both use the word “atom” is like calling a Greek “logos” the same as a 21st century computer “logic gate” because both involve the word “logic.”
- “Dalton stole from ancient India” has no documentary evidence. Dalton was an English chemist working in Manchester. He learned chemistry from Joseph Black’s textbook and Lavoisier’s work. There is no documentary evidence that he ever encountered the Vaisheshika Sutra or any Indian atomistic text. The claim of theft is, again, a retrofit.
- The bhakt who claims “Kanada equals Dalton” is also implicitly claiming “Kanada equals Democritus.” If you accept the bhakt’s logic, then Indian and Greek atomism are also identical. Which would mean Indian sages did not “discover” atomism alone. They proposed it independently and simultaneously with Greek sages. That is the actually defensible historical claim, and it is impressive enough on its own.
The Honest Picture
Kanada was a genuine philosophical pioneer. The Vaisheshika school is one of the six classical darshanas of Hindu philosophy, and it developed important ideas about:
- Categorisation of reality into substance, quality, action, generality, particularity, and inherence. This is the first systematic attempt at metaphysical taxonomy in Indian thought.
- The indivisible particle (anu) doctrine, as discussed.
- The combination rules for how anu form larger structures, which influenced later Indian thought, including Buddhist atomism.
- A theory of causation that distinguished material, efficient, and formal causes (somewhat like Aristotle).
This is real philosophical work. Kanada deserves to be taught alongside Democritus in any honest world history of ideas. The mistake is to claim he did Dalton’s work. He did not. He did Kanada’s work. Which was important in its own right.
Modern Indian chemistry has its own real achievements. C.V. Raman’s effect, Asima Chatterjee’s work on alkaloids and antimalarials, M.S. Subbulakshmi’s work on chemical synthesis, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the IITs and CSIR labs. These are documented Indian contributions. They are recent. They are real. They do not need Kanada to be Dalton.

10The Theory of Relativity in the Vedas
Einstein’s theory of relativity, both special and general, was already understood by ancient Indian sages. Time dilation is described in Puranic stories where one day on a higher loka equals a thousand or a million years on Earth. Brahma’s day is precisely the age of the universe. This proves the Vedic seers had relativity before Einstein.
Where It Came From
This is one of the most repeated claims in Indian motivational content. It often appears alongside the E=mc² claim from Chapter 6. The specific Puranic stories cited include:
- King Kakudmi and his daughter Revati, from the Bhagavata Purana. They travel to Brahma’s realm, spend a short time there, and return to find that 108 yugas have passed on Earth. Revati has to be married off to someone alive in the new era (Balarama).
- The story of Muchukunda, who fights alongside the gods, sleeps for a kalpa, and wakes up in a different age.
- Brahma’s lifespan, given precisely in Puranic texts as 100 Brahma-years, each Brahma-day being 4.32 billion human years.
These stories are old and beloved. The interpretation that they describe Einstein’s relativity is recent, from around the 1990s onward, popularised by writers in both India and the West who wanted to find “scientific Hinduism” in old myths.
What the Original Texts Actually Say
The Kakudmi-Revati story, in the Bhagavata Purana (Book 9, Canto 3), describes a father and daughter visiting Lord Brahma to ask for a suitable groom. Brahma is busy listening to music. By the time he can attend to them, vast time has passed on Earth (the Bhagavata Purana gives “twenty-seven chatur-yugas,” roughly 116 million human years). They return and find their suitors all dead.
The Bhagavata Purana describes this as a property of Brahma’s realm, where time flows differently than on Earth. It is presented as a feature of the spiritual hierarchy of lokas. It is not framed as a property of motion or gravity. Brahma is sitting still. Kakudmi and Revati are sitting still in front of him. The time difference is purely a function of which loka you are in.
This is fundamentally different from Einstein’s relativity.
The Real Science
Einstein published special relativity in 1905. Its central insight: time and length are not absolute; they depend on the observer’s motion. A clock moving fast relative to you ticks slower (time dilation). A ruler moving fast relative to you contracts in length. These effects are tiny at everyday speeds but become significant near the speed of light. They have been tested directly. GPS satellites must correct for them or the system gives wrong positions. He published general relativity in 1915. Its central insight: gravity is not a force but the curvature of spacetime caused by mass and energy. Massive objects warp spacetime, and other objects move along the curves. This predicted the bending of light by the sun (confirmed in 1919), the precession of Mercury’s perihelion (already observed), gravitational waves (detected in 2015), and black holes (imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope in 2019).
Both relativity theories are quantitative. They predict specific numerical effects. They have been tested with extreme precision. Time dilation is measured every day in particle accelerators and in atomic clocks flown on airplanes. Gravitational waves were detected by LIGO with a precision of about 1 part in 10⁻²¹. These are not metaphors. They are exact equations.
The Debunk
- “Time flows differently in higher lokas” is not the same as time dilation. Einstein’s time dilation depends on relative motion or on gravitational potential. It has a precise formula. The Puranic loka time differences depend on which spiritual realm you are in, with no formula and no relation to motion or gravity. The two ideas have a vague poetic resemblance and zero quantitative overlap.
- The Puranic stories use round, mythologically meaningful numbers. 108 yugas, 4,320,000 years per chatur-yuga, 1,000 chatur-yugas per kalpa. These are constructed to fit the four-fold structure of the yugas, with each yuga being a different proportion (4:3:2:1) of the total. They are theology, not measurement.
- The actual age of the universe is about 13.8 billion years. This is measured by the cosmic microwave background, the recession of distant galaxies, and the age of the oldest stars. The Puranic “day of Brahma” of 4.32 billion years is sometimes cited as close to the age of the Earth (4.54 billion years), which would be a “hit” if you ignore that it was supposed to be the age of the universe (a totally different number) and that the Puranic claim is for the cyclic creation and dissolution of cosmos, not its single age. The numerical “coincidence” only works if you reinterpret what the Purana is claiming.
- Einstein’s relativity makes specific testable predictions that have been confirmed. Bending of light by 1.75 arcseconds at the sun’s limb. Mercury’s perihelion precessing by 43 arcseconds per century beyond Newtonian prediction. GPS satellite clocks running 38 microseconds per day faster than ground clocks. The Puranas make no such testable quantitative predictions.
- If the Vedic seers had general relativity, we would expect Indian astronomy to have computed the bending of light by gravity, the precession of Mercury, and the propagation speed of gravitational waves. None of these computations appear in any Indian text. The reason is simple. The Puranas were not doing physics. They were doing mythology, theology, and cosmic poetry.
The Honest Picture
The Puranic stories of time dilation between lokas are beautiful pieces of mythological imagination. They explore deep human themes. The strangeness of cosmic time. The smallness of human concerns in a vast universe. The grief of returning home to find loved ones gone. The Kakudmi story, in particular, has emotional weight that any reader can feel.
Modern relativity is also strange and beautiful, in a different way. It tells us that time itself bends with gravity, that two events can be simultaneous for one observer and not for another, that black holes are real and have been photographed.
These are two different magnificent things. Conflating them does not honour either. The honest path is to read the Bhagavata Purana for its theological power, and to read Einstein’s papers for their physics. Both are valuable. They are valuable for different reasons.

- Brahmastra is described as a magical, chant-activated, god-gifted weapon. The “nuclear bomb” framing came from European ancient-astronaut writers in the 1970s. Oppenheimer quoting the Gita in 1965 proves a 20th-century physicist read Sanskrit poetry, not that ancient Indians had nukes.
- Mohenjo Daro was not destroyed by nuclear war. About 37 to 44 skeletons total have been found across a century of excavation, not “hundreds.” No radiation has been measured. No vitrified bricks at the site. The civilization declined gradually over two centuries due to climate and river changes.
- The Sudarshan Chakra is described as magical and mentally controlled, not as a guided missile. No propulsion, no sensors, no warhead. India’s real missile achievements are DRDO programmes like BrahMos and Agni.
- The Pashupatastra is described as a universe-destroying chant-weapon that Arjuna never actually uses. “Hydrogen bomb” is just the Brahmastra claim with extra inflation.
- Astras like Agneyastra and Varunastra control elemental forces (fire, water, wind). They are not thermobaric, torpedo, or sonic weapons. They are mythological, activated by mantras.
- “Vedas contain E=mc²” was a 2015 claim by India’s Science Minister Harsh Vardhan. The Stephen Hawking endorsement he cited was fake. The Hawking Foundation publicly denied it.
- The Hanuman Chalisa’s “yug sahasra yojan par bhanu” is a poetic line, not an astronomical measurement. The “calculation” requires picking flexible-value units to fit the modern answer (reverse engineering).
- Bhaskaracharya II noted that Earth attracts objects. This is an observation, not the inverse-square law of universal gravitation. Newton’s Principia is a quantitative theory. Bhaskara wrote a single descriptive sentence.
- Kanada’s anu doctrine is a philosophical atomism similar to Greek atomism from the same era. It is not Dalton’s chemistry, which required experimental mass ratios.
- Puranic loka time-dilation stories are theological, not relativistic. Einstein’s relativity depends on motion and gravity, makes quantitative predictions, and has been precisely tested.
The Pattern, Again
This whole part has been the same pattern as Parts 1 and 2. Real ancient Indian achievements (Kanada’s philosophy, Bhaskara’s mathematics, Tulsidas’s poetry) exist. The bhakt move is to inflate the real achievement into something more dramatic that matches a modern discovery. The text never says what the bhakt claims it says. The actual scientific concept (gravity, atom, relativity) has specific quantitative content that the ancient text does not have. The bhakt either ignores the missing content, or papers over it with vague analogies.
