Cows, Plants, and Sacred Objects

When biology gets sacrificed at the altar of pride.

A Note Before You Read This Part

This part is going to upset some people. Not because it attacks anyone’s god, but because it touches the cow.

Let me say this clearly, once. I have nothing against the cow. I grew up around them. My grandmother sang to her cow before milking. In Sikhi we are taught to respect all life. The cow is gentle, useful, and worthy of care. That is not the issue.

The issue is what some people now say about the cow. That her milk contains gold. That her dung blocks nuclear radiation. That she alone among mammals exhales oxygen. That her urine cures cancer, AIDS, diabetes, and COVID. That a special nerve on her hump pulls energy from the sun. These are not religious statements. These are scientific statements, made with full confidence, by ministers and chairmen of government commissions, on television and in court.

When science gets dressed up as religion, two things die. Science dies because it stops being science. And religion dies a slower death — because every false claim made in its name becomes a stone in its own grave.

The same will be done in this part with plants and sacred objects. Tulsi. Peepal. Peacock tears. Vedic vegetarianism. Ahimsa as a 5,000-year-old principle. Each will be checked against the actual texts, the actual biology, and the actual history. Some claims will hold up partly. Most will not.

Read it slowly. If a single line offends you, finish the chapter before you decide. You may still disagree at the end. That is allowed. What is not allowed, in any serious tradition, is calling a lie a truth just because it flatters us.

1Indian Cow Milk Contains Gold

The Claim

The milk of the Indian desi cow contains actual gold — that is what gives it the yellowish tint. Foreign cows do not have this property. The gold is medicinal and explains why ghee made from desi cow milk is special.

1Where It Came From

This claim has been repeated by several public figures, but the most quoted version is from Vallabhbhai Kathiria, chairman of the Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog (the National Cow Commission set up by the Government of India in 2019). In multiple statements between 2019 and 2021, Kathiria said the urine and milk of the desi cow contain gold, and that the yellow tinge of A2 milk is proof of this.

The claim has older echoes. Some Ayurveda commentators say “swarna kshara” (gold residue) is found in the cow. Modern Hindutva platforms have amplified the chairman’s remarks as scientific fact.

2What the Texts Actually Say

Classical Ayurveda — Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridayam — praises cow milk and ghee for nourishment, digestion, and rejuvenation. None of them say cow milk contains the metal gold. Swarna bhasma (calcined gold) is a separate preparation, made by burning gold leaf with herbs across many stages. The texts list it as a distinct rasayana. They do not say it is already present in milk.

3The Real Science

Define — A1 vs A2 Milk

Cow milk contains beta-casein protein. Most European breeds carry the A1 variant. Most Indian zebu (humped) cows carry A2. The difference is one amino acid at position 67. A2 milk may be slightly easier to digest for some people. That is the only genuine difference. No gold is involved.

The yellow tint in desi cow milk and ghee comes from beta-carotene — a plant pigment the cow eats and passes into her fat. Cows that graze on green pasture produce yellower milk. Cows fed only grain produce whiter milk. This is well-known dairy chemistry, established in the early twentieth century.

Detection of gold in milk has been tested. In 2020, the IIT Madras and other labs ran trace-element analyses on Indian cow milk in response to the claim. Gold was not present at any detectable level. Calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium — yes. Gold — no.

4The Debunk

If gold were present in cow milk, every dairy in the world would be filtering milk to extract it. Gold is currently worth roughly six thousand US dollars per ounce. A litre of milk would contain, if the claim were true, an amount worth at least pocket change. No dairy on earth extracts gold from milk because there is no gold in milk.

Beta-carotene is not gold. It is a vitamin A precursor. Calling carotene “gold” because it looks yellow is the same logic as calling lemon juice “uranium” because it is bright.

5The Honest Picture

Indian desi cow milk has real qualities. It is rich in A2 beta-casein. It carries beta-carotene because Indian cows often graze on diverse fodder. Ghee made from it has flavour and tradition behind it. These are worth celebrating.

What is not worth celebrating is a government commission chairman telling the public that gold metal is dissolved in milk. The chairman’s statement embarrasses both the cow and the commission.

2Cows Exhale Oxygen

The Claim

Unlike all other animals, the cow exhales oxygen rather than carbon dioxide. This makes her a living oxygen factory and explains why being near cows is healthy.

1Where It Came From

The most-quoted version of this statement was made by Dilip Ghosh, then BJP West Bengal president, in May 2020. Earlier, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti (Union Minister of State) made a similar comment in 2017. Several gaushala publications had said the same since the 1990s. A handful of “cow science” pamphlets distributed by the Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog also repeated it in some form.

2What the Texts Actually Say

This is a purely modern claim. No verse in the Vedas, Puranas, or Ayurvedic texts says the cow exhales oxygen. The Vedas praise the cow as “gomata” — mother — for the gifts of milk and dung. They do not make claims about her gas exchange.

3The Real Science

Define — Respiration

All mammals, including cows, breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. This is the universal pattern of aerobic respiration. Cells burn sugar with oxygen and release carbon dioxide and water as waste.

Cows are ruminants. They have a four-chambered stomach where bacteria ferment grass. This fermentation produces methane, which the cow burps out (mostly from the mouth, some from the rear). Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. A single dairy cow releases roughly 70 to 120 kilograms of methane per year. The cow is, in climate terms, a methane factory — the opposite of an oxygen producer.

The molecules that produce oxygen are plants with chlorophyll, through photosynthesis. No mammal does this. There is no mammal anywhere in the world that exhales oxygen. The claim would require the cow to violate the basic chemistry of mitochondria.

4The Debunk

If cows exhaled oxygen, oxygen levels would rise dramatically in stables. They do not. In poorly ventilated cattle sheds, oxygen drops and carbon dioxide rises — the opposite of the claim. This is why dairy barns are designed for ventilation.

Cows are warm-blooded mammals with hemoglobin almost identical to ours. They use oxygen the same way we do. The claim that they reverse the process is not an “alternative biology”. It is a misunderstanding so basic that it would fail a tenth-grade biology paper in any country, India included.

5The Honest Picture

The cow gives milk. Her dung is a useful fertiliser and fuel. Her presence in agriculture is genuinely valuable. None of this requires inventing a magical respiratory system for her. Inventing one only makes serious researchers walk away from gaushala science.

If we want our gaushalas to be respected, we should let cows be cows — not turn them into plants.

3The “Surya Ketu Nadi” on the Cow’s Hump

The Claim

The Indian desi cow has a special nerve, called Surya Ketu Nadi, in her hump. This nerve absorbs solar energy and converts it into vitamins and minerals, which then enter her milk. Foreign cows lack this hump and therefore lack this power.

1Where It Came From

This claim is repeated in many RSS-aligned and Patanjali-style publications from the 1990s onward. It does not appear in any classical Ayurvedic or Vedic text. The phrase Surya Ketu Nadi is constructed from Sanskrit-sounding words but is not found in Charaka, Sushruta, or any pre-modern text. Searches of digitised Sanskrit corpora — including the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and Muktabodha — return no occurrences in pre-twentieth-century literature.

2What the Texts Actually Say

Ayurveda’s anatomy texts list 24 main “nadis” (channels for fluid or breath) in the body. None is called Surya Ketu. None is described as absorbing sunlight and converting it to vitamins. The closest concept is “ojas”, a quality of vitality, but it is not a sun-collecting nerve.

3The Real Science

Define — The Cow’s Hump

The hump on a zebu (Bos indicus) cow is a fatty muscular structure called the rhomboideus or thoracic hump. It is a fat reserve and a muscle attachment site. It is similar to the camel’s hump in function — a stored energy depot. It contains nerves like the rest of the body. It is not a solar panel.

Sunlight produces vitamin D in mammal skin through the action of UV-B on cholesterol. This happens in all mammals, including humped and humpless cows. It is not specific to a “surya ketu” structure. The cow does not photosynthesize. The milk gets its vitamins from the cow’s diet and metabolism, not from sunlight striking the hump.

4The Debunk

If the hump were converting sunlight to nutrients, an indoor cow (kept in a closed shed) would produce nutritionally inferior milk. Studies do not show this. Milk composition depends on breed, feed, lactation stage, and health — not on hump-sun exposure.

Animals that genuinely absorb solar energy for nutrients are called plants. They have chlorophyll. The desi cow does not.

5The Honest Picture

Indian zebu cows are genuinely well-adapted to tropical conditions. They tolerate heat better than European breeds. Their hump is part of that adaptation. That is a real story, worth telling. The fictional Surya Ketu Nadi adds nothing and discredits real scientists who study zebu genetics.

4Cow Dung Blocks Nuclear Radiation

The Claim

Cow dung walls and floors in traditional Indian homes block nuclear and other radiation. Cow dung chips applied to the body protect against COVID-19. Houses smeared with gobar were unaffected during the Bhopal gas tragedy.

1Where It Came From

The COVID version was promoted in May 2021 by groups in Gujarat encouraging people to coat themselves in cow dung and urine to ward off the virus. The Indian Medical Association issued a public warning against the practice on May 11, 2021. The radiation-protection version is older — appearing in pamphlets of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s affiliated gau-vidya networks from the 1990s, and revived after the Fukushima accident in 2011.

2What the Texts Actually Say

Classical Indian texts praise cow dung as a purifier and a building material. They predate the concept of nuclear radiation by thousands of years. Texts cannot make claims about a phenomenon discovered in 1896.

3The Real Science

Define — Radiation Shielding

Radiation shielding works by mass. Dense materials — lead, concrete, water, soil — absorb radiation. Thickness matters. A few millimeters of cow dung absorbs about as much gamma radiation as a few millimeters of any other organic matter, which is negligible.

Cow dung is mostly water and fibre. Once dried, it is light and porous. It has no special radiation-absorbing property. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and other Indian institutions have measured the shielding properties of various traditional building materials. Mud and cow-dung floors have no anomalous protection compared to plain soil of the same thickness.

On COVID: SARS-CoV-2 is a respiratory virus. Smearing dung on the body does nothing to prevent infection. Dung carries its own bacteria — E. coli, Salmonella — and dung-smearing during the pandemic led to documented secondary infections, including in dairy workers.

4The Debunk

If cow dung blocked radiation, hospitals would line oncology rooms with gobar instead of lead. They do not. The nuclear medicine departments at AIIMS, Tata Memorial, and PGI Chandigarh use lead, concrete, and tungsten. Not dung.

The Bhopal gas tragedy of December 1984 killed thousands in homes of every construction type, including traditional mud-and-dung homes. The claim that gobar walls saved households is contradicted by the death records held by the Madhya Pradesh state government.

5The Honest Picture

Cow dung has genuine, modest uses. As fuel cake, it has been burned in Indian kitchens for millennia. As a soil amendment, its nitrogen content helps crops. As a wall plaster, it provides mild thermal insulation. These are real benefits.

Telling people it blocks Cesium-137 or stops a coronavirus is a different category of statement. It is a lie that costs lives during pandemics.

5Cow Urine: A Universal Medicine

The Claim

Cow urine (gomutra) cures cancer, diabetes, AIDS, COVID-19, and over a hundred other diseases. It is a fully scientific medicine, supported by US patents and Indian government research.

1Where It Came From

The claim was loudly promoted by the Patanjali group, by various BJP-aligned ministers, and by the Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog from 2019. The “US patent” usually cited is US 6,896,907 B2, granted in 2005 to a team led by Sundar Kumar Khanuja at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The patent covers a specific use of distilled cow urine as a “bioenhancer” for the antibiotic rifampicin and the antifungal amphotericin B. It does not patent cow urine as a cure for anything.

2What the Texts Actually Say

Classical Ayurveda — Charaka Samhita, Chikitsa Sthana — lists gomutra among the eight types of urine used in some preparations, alongside urine of goat, sheep, donkey, and elephant. It is recommended in small medicinal doses for specific conditions like obesity, edema, and worms. It is not described as a universal cure. The same texts also recommend bloodletting and emetics for various conditions. We do not adopt those today.

3The Real Science

Define — What Urine Is

Urine, in any mammal, is the body’s waste filter. It contains water (about 95%), urea, creatinine, salts, hormones, and small amounts of other compounds. The composition varies with diet. There is nothing magical in cow urine that is absent from goat, sheep, or human urine.

The cancer claim has been tested. A study at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, examined cow urine distillate against cancer cell lines. The result published in standard oncology channels: no clinically meaningful anti-cancer effect.

The bioenhancer effect described in the US patent is real but narrow. The patent shows that a tiny dose of distilled cow urine, when added to rifampicin in lab conditions, allows the antibiotic to be absorbed slightly better. This is a long way from “cow urine cures cancer”. The patent itself does not claim that.

On COVID: drinking cow urine does not kill SARS-CoV-2. Multiple cases of urinary tract infections and ulcers were reported in 2020-21 after gomutra-drinking parties.

4The Debunk

A US patent on a specific bioenhancer use is not a cure for cancer. Reading the patent text destroys the inflated claims around it.

If gomutra cured AIDS, the WHO would be distributing it in sub-Saharan Africa. They are not. They are distributing antiretrovirals, which actually suppress HIV.

If gomutra cured diabetes, no Indian would need insulin. The diabetes capital of the world, India, would not have 100 million diabetics, many of them in the very gomutra-drinking population.

5The Honest Picture

Ayurveda’s use of various urines is a part of its history. Whether it has any modest niche utility today is a question for proper clinical trials, not for ministers and gau-vidya activists.

Until those trials show otherwise, “cow urine cures cancer” remains a statement that hurts cancer patients, delays real treatment, and embarrasses both Ayurveda and modern Indian science.

6Peacocks Reproduce Through Tears

The Claim

The peacock is celibate. He does not mate with the peahen. The peahen becomes pregnant by drinking the tears of the peacock. This is why the peacock is India’s national bird and is associated with Lord Krishna.

1Where It Came From

The most-cited version was stated by Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma, of the Rajasthan High Court, on May 31, 2017, while delivering a judgement urging that the cow be declared the national animal. He said, on record: “The peacock is a lifelong celibate — he never has sex with the peahen. The peahen gets pregnant from his tears.”

The judge later said he was referring to traditional belief and stories. But the comment was made from the bench, and it travelled across the country as a statement of fact.

2What the Texts Actually Say

Some Hindu folk traditions and some medieval poetry do describe the peacock as melancholic and “celibate” in a metaphorical sense, the way Persian poetry calls the moth a martyr of the candle. These are images. They are not zoology.

Classical Sanskrit ornithology, including references in the Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira (6th century CE), describes peacock mating dances. The texts that touch on bird breeding mention nest-building and chicks, not virgin birth.

3The Real Science

Define — Peacock Reproduction

The Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) reproduces by sexual intercourse. The male displays his train. If the female accepts, they mate. The female lays 4 to 8 eggs, which she incubates for about 28 days. This has been documented in every ornithology text since the seventeenth century and is observable on any farm in Rajasthan.

The Bombay Natural History Society, the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology, and the Wildlife Institute of India have all studied peacock breeding. None has reported a tear-based mode of reproduction. None could, because none exists.

4The Debunk

The fact that a sitting judge of a High Court made this statement, in a written ruling, is one of the saddest examples of how mythology can override basic biology in public life. A judge is not a biologist. But a judgement is supposed to be checked.

If peacocks reproduced through tears, captive breeding programs in Rajasthan zoos would not need pairs. They do. A male alone produces no offspring no matter how much he cries.

5The Honest Picture

The peacock is genuinely beautiful, genuinely important in Indian culture, and genuinely India’s national bird since 1963. It is associated with Karthikeya, Saraswati, and Krishna in iconography. None of this requires biology to be rewritten.

When a judge of a constitutional court says peahens get pregnant from tears, the right response is not embarrassed silence. It is to gently say: respected sir, the peacock mates. That is not less divine. That is just true.

7Tulsi Cures Everything and Releases Oxygen All Day

The Claim

The tulsi (holy basil) plant cures cancer, diabetes, COVID, asthma, kidney disease, and over a hundred other ailments. It is the only plant that releases oxygen twenty-four hours a day, which is why placing it near a home purifies the air.

1Where It Came From

The medicinal claims come from a long Ayurveda tradition that genuinely uses tulsi as a tonic herb. The exaggerated “cures everything” version is a modern marketing additive, used heavily by Patanjali and similar companies. The “24-hour oxygen” claim has circulated on WhatsApp since around 2010 and entered school textbooks in several states.

2What the Texts Actually Say

The Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention tulsi (Ocimum sanctum / Ocimum tenuiflorum) as a useful herb for cough, fever, and respiratory complaints. The Padma Purana places tulsi at the heart of Vishnu worship. Neither text says she releases oxygen at night. The Sanskrit word for oxygen (pranavayu in modern usage) is itself a translation made in the twentieth century.

3The Real Science

Define — Photosynthesis vs Respiration

Plants photosynthesize during the day — they absorb CO2 and release O2 using sunlight. At night, with no sunlight, photosynthesis stops. They continue to respire like any living thing — absorbing oxygen and releasing CO2. This is universal plant biology.

Tulsi follows this normal pattern. She does not violate basic plant biology. At night, like every flowering plant, she releases CO2 and absorbs O2.

A small group of plants — succulents, cacti, pineapple — use a special pathway called CAM photosynthesis (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism). They open their pores at night to absorb CO2, store it as malic acid, and use it the next day. They fix carbon at night. They do not release oxygen at night. Tulsi is not a CAM plant.

On the medicinal side, tulsi does contain genuine active compounds — eugenol, ursolic acid, rosmarinic acid — with mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in lab studies. Clinical trials show modest benefit in stress reduction and blood sugar in some studies. None has shown it cures cancer or AIDS.

4The Debunk

If tulsi released oxygen at night, every government would mandate tulsi forests around hospitals. They do not. The oxygen output of any indoor plant is too small to meaningfully change room air composition.

The cancer claim has been tested. Meta-analyses of tulsi clinical trials (Cohen, Journal of Ayurveda, 2014) show mild metabolic benefits and no cancer cure.

5The Honest Picture

Tulsi is a real medicinal plant. She has real but modest benefits. She holds a beloved place in Hindu home worship. She does not need to be promoted as an oxygen factory or a cancer cure to deserve that place.

8Peepal and Banyan Trees Release Oxygen at Night

The Claim

The peepal tree (and sometimes the banyan and neem) is the only tree on earth that releases oxygen at night. That is why ancient Hindus worshipped it — they knew the secret of oxygen long before modern science.

1Where It Came From

This claim appears in WhatsApp messages, RSS-aligned booklets, and even some Indian school textbooks. It is sometimes attributed to “NASA research” or “ISRO scientists”. No such NASA or ISRO publication exists. The claim is folklore dressed in lab coats.

2What the Texts Actually Say

The peepal (Ficus religiosa) is revered in the Bhagavad Gita (10.26), where Krishna says “of trees I am the ashvattha”. The Buddha attained enlightenment under a peepal. The banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is sacred to Shiva. The texts praise the trees for shade, shelter, and symbolism. They do not say the trees produce oxygen at night.

3The Real Science

Define — What CAM Plants Actually Do

CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) plants — including some succulents, orchids, and bromeliads — absorb CO2 at night and store it as malic acid in their cells. The next day, in sunlight, they release this stored CO2 internally and turn it into sugar through normal photosynthesis. They release O2 only during the day, when their chloroplasts are working. Even CAM plants do not release oxygen at night.

The peepal and banyan are not CAM plants. They are C3 plants, like most temperate and tropical trees. They photosynthesize and release oxygen during the day, and respire (releasing CO2) at night. The claim that they release oxygen at night is biologically false for two layers of reasons: peepal is not CAM, and even CAM plants do not release O2 at night.

This is verifiable. Studies of peepal gas exchange (for example, Singh and Srivastava, Indian Journal of Plant Physiology) show normal C3 photosynthesis. NASA’s Clean Air Study, the document most often misquoted to support this claim, tested houseplants for VOC absorption indoors. It did not test the peepal. It did not claim any plant produces oxygen at night.

4The Debunk

If peepal released oxygen at night, the air composition under a peepal tree at midnight would be measurably oxygen-rich. It is not. Measurements show CO2 is slightly elevated at night under leafy canopies due to plant respiration — the opposite of the claim.

Calling the peepal “the only tree that releases oxygen at night” is doubly wrong: no tree does this, and the peepal is not even a candidate.

5The Honest Picture

The peepal and banyan are remarkable trees. They are long-lived, provide enormous canopies, support hundreds of bird and insect species, and have been part of Indian spiritual life for thousands of years. They deserve respect for what they are. Inventing a false botany about them is an insult to the ancients, who in fact were excellent observers of plants — they just did not pretend to know about gases that they could not yet measure.

9Vedic Hindus Were Always Vegetarian

The Claim

Vedic Aryans, the rishis, and Hindus through all of history have been vegetarian. Meat-eating, especially beef-eating, came only with the Muslims. Vegetarianism is the natural and original Hindu diet.

1Where It Came From

This claim is repeated widely — in Hindutva pamphlets, by some “cow protection” politicians, and in modern textbook simplifications. The fullest version is associated with twentieth-century reformist preaching, where vegetarianism was elevated to a marker of Hindu identity.

2What the Texts Actually Say

The Rigveda and other Vedic samhitas describe animal sacrifice (yajna) at length. The Ashvamedha (horse sacrifice), Gomedha (cow/bull offering), Naramedha (mentioned, contested), and many smaller animal sacrifices are described in the Yajurveda and Shatapatha Brahmana.

Specific examples: Rigveda 10.86.13-14 describes Indra’s appetite, including bulls. Rigveda 10.27.2 and several Brahmana passages describe the cooking of cattle. The Shatapatha Brahmana (3.4.1) records: “If a learned Brahmin or king is to be honoured, a bull or a barren cow should be slaughtered.” The historian D.N. Jha in his book The Myth of the Holy Cow (2001) collected dozens of such references with verse citations.

The shift toward vegetarianism in mainstream Hindu practice is largely a product of the Shramana traditions — Jainism and Buddhism — from around the 6th century BCE onward. Their ahimsa philosophy gradually influenced Brahminical practice. By the time of Manu (around 200 BCE to 200 CE), the texts are conflicted — some passages still permit meat in specific contexts, others restrict it. Full Brahmin vegetarianism became dominant only over later centuries.

3The Real Science (Archaeology)

Excavations at Harappan and post-Harappan sites — including Hastinapura, Atranjikhera, and Inamgaon — show large quantities of cattle bones with butchery marks. Cattle, goat, sheep, and even pig bones appear in cooking contexts. The archaeologist B.B. Lal, who excavated Hastinapura in 1950-52, documented this.

4The Debunk

The “Hindus were always vegetarian” claim does not survive contact with the Vedas themselves. The Vedas, the very texts that define Vedic religion, describe animal sacrifice and cooked meat. Claiming the opposite is not piety. It is editing the texts in our own minds.

The 2014 India Human Development Survey found around 71% of Indians eat meat at least occasionally. If vegetarianism were the “natural Hindu diet”, most Hindus would be acting unnaturally. They are not. They are continuing a long, mixed, real tradition.

5The Honest Picture

Vegetarianism is a beautiful tradition in many Hindu communities, especially among Brahmins, Jains, and certain Vaishnava sects. It has a long history. It is associated with ahimsa, with bhakti, and with personal discipline. None of this needs to be defended by lying about the Vedas.

The Vedic rishis ate meat. They also wrote some of the most exquisite spiritual poetry humanity has produced. Both things can be true. Both are true.

10Ahimsa is a 5,000-Year-Old Hindu Value

The Claim

Ahimsa (non-violence) is the foundational value of Hinduism, taught in the Vedas, and unchanged for five thousand years. Gandhi simply revived what was always there.

1Where It Came From

This framing was popularised in the twentieth century, especially through Gandhi’s writings and the Indian freedom movement’s need to present a unified, peaceful Hindu philosophy to the world. It was reinforced by later reformist movements.

2What the Texts Actually Say

The word “ahimsa” does not appear as a central virtue in the Rigveda. It is mentioned in passing in some later Vedic and Upanishadic texts. The Vedic ritual world is full of animal sacrifice, war hymns, and prayers for victory over enemies. Indra is celebrated as a slayer. The early Vedic ethical universe is not pacifist.

Ahimsa emerges as a central principle in the Shramana traditions — Jainism, founded or reformed by Mahavira (traditionally 599-527 BCE), and Buddhism, founded by the Buddha (traditionally 563-483 BCE). For Mahavira, ahimsa was the supreme vow. Jain monks famously walk with brooms to avoid stepping on insects.

Within the orthodox Hindu world, ahimsa is elevated in the Upanishads (especially the Chandogya), in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (around 400 CE) where it is the first yama, in the Bhagavad Gita, and in the writings of Vaishnava and Bhakti saints. This is a gradual absorption of Shramana ethics into mainstream Hindu practice over a millennium.

3The Real History

Define — Shramana Traditions

“Shramana” refers to the ascetic, renunciate movements of around the 6th-5th centuries BCE in India — including Jainism, Buddhism, and the Ajivikas. They challenged Vedic sacrifice and emphasised personal liberation, often through extreme non-violence and asceticism. They are the soil in which ahimsa became a central virtue.

The integration of ahimsa into orthodox Hinduism was not instant. The Manusmriti (around 200 BCE to 200 CE) still permits meat in specific contexts. The Mahabharata contains long debates about whether killing in war is dharmic. Ashoka’s edicts (around 250 BCE), under Buddhist influence, mark one of the first state-level commitments to non-violence.

4The Debunk

If ahimsa were a 5,000-year-old core Hindu value, the Vedic sacrificial system would have been impossible. It existed and was central for centuries. The claim collapses the historical timeline by about a thousand years and erases the Jain and Buddhist contributions to Indian ethics.

Gandhi himself, in his autobiography, credits his Jain neighbour Raychandbhai for shaping his understanding of ahimsa. He did not pretend the value was uniquely or originally Hindu.

5The Honest Picture

Ahimsa is a genuinely beautiful Indian value — one of the great gifts India has given the world. Its origin is broadly Indian, not narrowly Hindu. Mahavira and the Buddha are part of the same civilizational soil. Mainstream Hinduism absorbed and developed the principle in its own ways. Modern political movements that erase Jain and Buddhist contributions while claiming ahimsa as their own are stealing credit.

The right honesty is this: ahimsa is older than any one religion in India, and younger than the Vedic sacrifices. It is a shared inheritance.

What Part 8 Tried to Do

This part was the hardest to write. Not because the facts were unclear, but because the cow is loved. Saying “the cow does not exhale oxygen” feels, to some readers, like saying “your mother is not a mother”. It is not that. It is only saying: a mother is loved for what she is, not for a fictional biology we attach to her.

Every claim in this part was promoted by named officials — chairmen of government commissions, ministers, party presidents, and even a sitting High Court judge. These were not the casual statements of devotees. They were the considered statements of people in positions of authority, broadcast on national platforms.

When such people speak nonsense in the name of Indian heritage, the right response is not to applaud. It is to gently say: respected sir, that is not true. And to say it in writing, with citations, so that the next generation knows the difference.
