Sapiens — My Own Reading of Sapiens

Everybody quotes Sapiens and almost nobody argues with it. So I read all twenty chapters myself, slowly, with a pen in my hand, and wrote down what Harari actually claims — chapter by chapter, in the plainest English I could manage, flagging exactly where the evidence gets thin.

I picked up Sapiens for the same reason most people do — it sits on shelves everywhere and gets quoted constantly by people who have not read it, and the bits that reach you second-hand (money is a fiction, farming was a mistake) sound either brilliant or annoying depending on who is repeating them. So I read the whole thing, slowly, with a pen, then read the arguments against it, which took longer than the book did. It is an easier book than Darwin’s, and that turns out to be the problem: Harari is a genuinely wonderful writer, and beautiful sentences make weak evidence feel strong. So this reading does two jobs at once — explaining what he actually says, simply and completely, and flagging, every time, where the ground under a claim is softer than the sentence sounds. Direct quotation is kept short, since Sapiens is a living book with a living author and a publisher rather than an 1859 text that belongs to everybody; where a passage matters, it goes in a box labelled his point, in my words, and the argument is given rather than the sentence. Eleven parts walk the whole book: the animal we were for two million years and the other kinds of human who died out around us, the Cognitive Revolution and the fiction that lets strangers cooperate, what life was actually like before farming and what happened to every large animal we met, the agricultural revolution as history’s biggest fraud, the imagined orders that hold societies of millions together, the ladders every society builds and calls natural, money and empire as two of the three glues, religion as the third, the scientific revolution’s founding admission of ignorance, capitalism and the industrial revolution, and the ending — happiness, the family’s dissolution, and the animal that is starting to redesign itself. Every part closes with a glossary and a running timeline, and every part says, in its own box, where I think Harari is wrong.
